so I underwent a sleep study a while and was diagnosed with the following: minor sleep apnea, severe restless leg syndrome, and severe hyperactive REM disorder.  I believe the third is what's causing my current issue.

 

I get "suck" in dreams.  I know I'm sleeping, but I can't get out.  I do all the tricks (looking for colour (but I already dream in colour), turning on and off lights, drinking water, etc.), yet I can never get out of the dream.

 

okay, so FINALLY I do.  but then I end up in another fucking dream.

 

and this will happen repeatedly until I travel through five to seven dreams.  and when I finally wake up for real, I'm covered in sweat, panicking, short of breath, and (my partner says) sometimes even yelling.

 

does anyone else have these "Inception"-like dreams?

and if so, how do you manage?

These are called lucid dreams.

You are dreaming but you know you are dreaming.

 

I have them at times.

Pinch yourself in the dream. Works for me every time. I wake up immediately.

 

There are excellent books on Lucid dreams. That may help as well if you understand what is going on. Also, if you know you are dreaming, try to fly. 

 

Flying is the mode of transport in dreams, and sometimes that can wake you up as well.

 

I would start writing them down also.

 

Are you in therapy? If so, bring your dreams to your therapist. You really are the only one who can transcribe your own dreams, figure out what they mean. Usually you are working out all of your real life frustrations.

 

Do you take a sleep med? That can also screw up your dreams. And Ad's affect dreams. Mine are a bit more fantasmagorical after starting Lexapro, but...my dreams have always been weird and very vivid.

 

If you are getting a CPAP for the apnea, that might help as well.

no, this is awesome.  thanks for the information.  I'm an avid researcher, so now I have some foundations from which to start on looking into this stuff.

 

I am on sleep medication.  however, these dreams occur more frequently and more intensely when I'm not taking the meds than when I am.

 

I sadly am not currently seeing a therapist.  I am working on setting up an arrangement with one.  but because of legal issues at the moment, things are ... icky.

 

logging them is a great idea.  because I often forget the details by the time I get dressed.  thanks!

I dream like this also, and for what seems like hours on end. Vivid colors, textures, strong emotions, people and places that exist only in dreams and are always the same, flying, and various "super powers" are all par for the course. Sometimes they are deeply disturbing and traumatizing, but sometimes they are also deeply moving and inspiring to the point where I would have a very hard time doing anything to change the way I sleep. 

I've noticed that Trazodone seems to make them more memorable, which I generally appreciate, but also easier to wake up from, which for me is not so good, because I generally can't fall back asleep, though if it has this effect on you it might be a plus. 

I've always been able to just will myself awake, the sensation is like coming up from a dive while swimming, but in something much thicker than water. Not sure how helpful this is, but it seems that if you are lucid dreaming the force of will should count for quite a bit. I definitely don't recommend making a habit of flying away from your problems, for me this tends to just morph it into an anxiety dream.

I used to have these kind of dream, not lately considering all the heavy medication I'm on. What I would do, which may sound silly, is give myself "powers" in my dreams. I could fly and become invisible in my dreams, so if it was something bad was happening, I could just fly away of become invisible. I could also take people with me when I flew or became invisible, all they had to do was be touching me, and it would do the same thing to them. I guess this was my defense mechanism for lucid dreams, but it always worked for me. If things got really bad, I could wake myself up, by somehow slowly beginning to move my body, and eventually it would wake me up. It was VERY hard to do that, because my body felt paralyzed while I was dreaming. Somehow I could manage just enough movement to wake myself up out of the dream. The only dream I've had like this recently, was that I was in a bubble bath drinking champagne, and I stopped, remembering that I don't drink and this was a dream. All I remember is looking around the room, and nothing after that.
