Does Wellbutrin impotence sometimes go away over time?

Recommended Posts

My husband is on meds for the first time. He has been on Wellbutrin 300 mg XL for 5 days and yesterday, day 4, he started feeling a bit better in terms of his depression but he also experienced really bad impotence. He still has a very high sex drive, normal sensation, but very bad ED. He will get an erection but it will only last a minute or two before subsiding. He is very frustrated of course. Does anyone know from personal experience or otherwise if this sounds like it may go away over time? I believe sexual side effects from antidepressants tend not to go away like other side effects, but my experience is mostly with SSRI's, wellbutrin is a whole different ballgame for me.

I found wellbutrin to have the opposite effect on me.  Other antidepressants, though, have lead to the problem you're describing for me in the past.  Hmm.  Is he on anything else other than wellbutrin?

Has he been checked out physically by a GP? Maybe its time to see a urologist. I agree that this is an odd side effect for Wellbutrin. Not saying it can't happen, but it's odd.

I think this is very unusual. I would call your the doctor who prescribed the med and mention this side effect.

Wellbutrin can be used to heighten sexual desire.  It is an SNRI.

However, it did have major side effects for me at first. One of which was over excitement, inability to focus, overall general speediness.

This may be what is affecting your husband.

Make sure he is not drinking coffee or taking any other stimulants.

It is possible it is too stimulating for him right now.

also, Did he start with the 300 XL?

That is a very high dose for someone who has never taken wellbutrin before.

Is he taking a generic or the brand?

Never fear. In the times I have just started Wellbutrin, I noticed a short period of sexual dysfunction which quickly resolved after a week or so. I believe it is the body's neurotransmitters adjusting to the drug. Give it another week!!

To correct a previous post, I don't believe it is in an SNRI.  It target noradrenaline and dopamine. Hence the lower risk of sexual side effects.

I would mention it to his doctor but seriously, four days in?  Could absolutely go away.  Also, it IS weird (in my experience) that he's on such a high dose immediately.  Could ask the doctor about starting at a lower dose for now--I have had good luck with sexual side effects going away with a slow titration up.
