Reformed Lurker

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I stumbled upon this site a couple of weeks ago. Some of the threads are so interesting that I wanted to leap into the fray a few times, which meant creating an account, so here it is.

My poor brain has had insult and injury in recent years, and my memory, cognition, and effectiveness were diminished. My visual processing suffered: depth perception is noticeably diminished, and I have trouble detecting an object that I am looking for, such as my phone on a table. I see everything except the thing I am looking for, which is right on the table in front of me. I call it "perverse selective blindness." I can counteract it by saying, "My phone is rectangular and flat and is in a blue case." Then I can see it! I had an MRI which showed 'multiple (small?) ischemic foci." The neurologist didn't think they explained any of my deficiencies, and anyway they are not uncommon.

I have yet to regain a place in the swim of things, which is beginning to get on my nerves. I don't think there are any medicines or treatments that would help, but maybe there are therapies that would teach my new brain to behave like the old one. I was pretty low until last year, and basically lived in the sofa and watched all of Netflix twice. Now I am taking classes and volunteering, and it's a world of difference.

All in all, I and grateful for what I still have: reading, writing, and artiness. I have been recovering, slowly, and things are going in the right direction.

My hubby had a Traumatic Brain Injury a few years ago and a subdural hematoma as a result.  I remember his frustration as he was trying to come back from that, so I can really sympathize with you.  The object identification must really be hard to deal with, although it sounds like you have developed a good coping strategy.

Welcome to our happy home and I hope you enjoy hanging out with us.
