SanitysOverrated
I understand why you have to sign a lease in a place you rent, but do the contracts have to read like you sold your soul to the devil??? I expect a penalty if I want to break my lease, but really.. 2122 dollars plus a 200 dollar re-listing fee, plus the rent every month until they rent it out?? BASTARDS!! Why don't you just take my kidney and my firstborn while you are at it. I know.. I know.. I signed the damn thing, but get real.
San
It's a dirty cycle they put you in. You basically have no choice if you want a place to live. Where I am currently, it costs $250 to break the lease, which isn't too terribly much, and I believe you can still get your last months rent. Check to see if what they're doing is legal in your area. Sometimes landlords try to get away with bullshit. I had a really bad one. One day I was evicted. The next day I was in the lease for another year. I took him to Landlord & Tenant court (with my roommate, as well) and we won, they let us out of the lease. Definitely contact someone to see if that is legal. It sounds mega-sketchy. In Ontario (Canada), we have the Landlord & Tenant act. See if you have something like that. They really helped me out, for free. A phone call can't hurt.
