Hester
As some of you may know, I've been struggling lately and I ended up in the ER Sunday evening. My husband took me when I told him I could hear the neighbors talking about me and that they were watching me. There are computers hooked in the walls which I can hear, and they are turning my brain into a computer. I told him I could feel my brain disappearing. When I got to the ER, I couldn't speak or even move. I felt paralyzed and when my husband tried to move me my body stayed stuck in certain positions. My brain had been wiped clean. It then became an antenna for the whole world - I could hear the whole world speaking - I feel extremely elated - I couldn't even open my eyes with the euphoria. I felt like I had become a saint or god. They said they couldn't do anything for me, but they gave Ativan while I was there and then gave me 4 days worth of Zyprexa to take home. This is on top of the Lithium I take already. I've managed to get an 'emergency' pdoc appointment on Monday - earliest I could get in. Anyway, I've taken 3 doses of the Zyprexa so far, every evening, and this morning I have woken up feeling markedly different. I don't feel anxious and I almost feel quite happy and positive. My brain doesn't feel so blank, and my thoughts don't feel like they are being taken out anymore. I still feel the same about the neighbors watching me, and that I'm connected to their computers, but it isn't filling me with as much fear as before. I don't feel as desperate or depressed. Tell me... is it possible that the Zyprexa would work this soon?? - I'm only taking 2.5mg a night right now, and for 3 nights. I'm asking because I'm worried I'm going to go from a mixed state up into manic state now... Everything I've read says it takes weeks for Z to work, which is why I'm concerned I'm going up up up now. Ash19
It could just be that you are coming out of the episode you were having, and the symptoms are just becoming less evident rather than changing - have you experienced anything similar to this before? How long do your episodes usually last?
Hester
Usually my episodes are mixed and with psychosis, and they last for weeks, sometimes months, and have been known to go from irritable & mixed, up into euphoric mania. That's what I'm wondering is happening... Though I've not taken Z before so I don't know how quickly it starts helping.
jt07
Zyprexa is one of the faster-acting antipsychotics, BUT 2.5 mg is an awfully small dose. I was given 5 mg for depression (but I couldn't handle the sedation). I've seen Zyprexa used like Haldol in the hospital to bring people down from mania rapidly. It is also sometimes used as a PRN to be taken when one feels mania coming on.
Hester
Yeah it's tiny, but basically they only gave me enough for 4 days, at 5mg, and it was 8 days til my pdoc appointment, I've been taking just 2.5 mg a day do it lasts til my app. The sedating effect is definitely helping. Just wondered if it was possible it was doing more, but I feel that it's probably not likely from people's responses. Might be my mood just getting elevated. It has been known. jt07
I wouldn't rule out the possibility that it is helping. It could very well be helping.
iaawal
I was given 7.5 of zyprexa. I went IP thinking my evil mind was making my body the robot try to murder me. Later that night I was good evil mind was quiet. Zyprexa is a beautiful drug. Now I take 15mg as needed but it always works fast.
Wonderful.Cheese
I took 20 mg for years. I agree with jt that it is probably helping. I was IP once and they gave me zyprexa zydis and haldol to calm my butt down. And boy did I sleep! I hadn't slept in days. I was really worked up and they put a security guard outside my room. dianthus
2.5mg is a small dose but yes, in my experience, it helps, and can do so very quickly. I can take 2.5 to 5mg for less than a week and start feeling markedly better. Edited May 15, 2015 by dianthus
Hester
Thank you everyone - that backs up how I feel. My mood is definitely elevated. Perhaps a little too much - awake until 4am (when i had to take Ativan) and was very active and productive yesterday. Up and at it again today! Woop. Still got a lot of the other symptoms but my mood is definitely much improved. There's no way I'm imagining it. 4 more days to get through till pdoc.... Flash
They say that Zyprexa starts working within six hours. I take 10 mg PRN for mania or mixed states, typically at night. It helps get me to sleep. The next day I have a bad hangover from it, but I'm no longer high. The day after that I'm back to where I was before the episode. Maybe one time it took an extra day. Anyway, that is how it works for me If I take it the same day I have symptoms. I don't know if it works as well or as quickly if I let the episode go on for a while. The nice thing is that I don't need to continue taking it, so I avoid any nasty side effects.
