UK Mental Health Overview

Recommended Posts

I found the following article (and its subsequent links) to provide an excellent status report on the current state of the NHS regarding MI care:

http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/may/13/jeremy-hunt-health-secretary-conservatives-government-scary-prospect-britains-mental-health

The Tory party have always seen mental health as a hinderance, a series of conditions to be reviled and treated with skepticism and derision. When we had a coalition government, the Lib Dems kept the Cons in check and stopped them from making sweeping changes to MI services, now that there is a majority Con government I fear for the future of MI care under the NHS.

We are already reeling from the cuts made over the last 5 years, the continued "austerity" plan Britain faces over the next 5 years WILL lead to the deaths of more mentally ill people, the worsening of conditions and the non-treatment of some of the most needy in society. Only time will tell what toll the poor, ignorant decisions of the elected few will have on the lives of the suffering masses.

Yeah, I read Mind's brief run down on the parties' manifestos, it was the Tory's one which was most worrisome. They mentioned that if you do not follow the "recommended course of treatment" by your doctor then you could have your benefits reduced. So what does that mean? If I didn't want to use antipsychotics and just therapy then I'd have my ESA cut because of that?
It was good, as Mind pointed out, that mental health was on everyone's agenda for the first time in the elections, which says a lot about it politically, that the "shame" of it is coming lose. i don't trust them. As Nick Clegg said, it's a shame the country can fallen aside to nationalist parties and fear tactics. It's also very worrisome what Theresa May has in store for cyber security.

Another article (I know it's not exactly a broadsheet but still pretty interesting) worth reading is this one. And for anyone who wants to not just access but work for mental health services, it really feels like we are screwed.
