Anticholinergic drugs = Cognitive Impairment ?

Recommended Posts

So I've read that anticholinergic drugs(artane, cogentin) are known to cause cognitive impairment(poor attention/concentration/memory).

Anybody here take their regular antipsychotic with artane or cogentin and don't have cognitive decline ?

Can anybody tell me any other drugs which will help with the eps symptoms without causing cognitive decline like how anticholinergic drugs do.

i was diagnosed with adhd as a child and an adult, so i can't say i've ever had the best attention span...

however, i think any additional cognitive impairment is, in my case, likely more attributable to psychotic breaks/negative symptoms of schizophrenia than the cogentin/artane i've taken. i've also taken propranolol to deal with akathisia, though it's a different class of medication.

anyway, i currently take cogentin and i don't notice additional impairment from it. hope that helps and best wishes to you.

The only anticholinergic I have taken is procyclidine. I only realised the extent of my cognitive impairment when I actually stopped taking it.

My concentration and memory was very poor and I would get lost for words mid sentence and even forget what I was talking about.

This decreased dramatically when I stopped taking it

Is it okay if you take both Artane(trihexyphenidyl) and your regular antipsychotic at the same time at night during bedtime ?

Will that prevent cognitive impairment caused by artane ? Maybe the side effects of artane will fade away through the night ?

I took cogentin for a while to combat the akathisia from Abilify. I didn't have any extra brain fog from cogentin, but Abilify was (and continues to be) another matter. I feel really slow and stupid on it. But it's the only side effect from it that I have (save for dry mouth, perhaps).

I am on 100 mg injected every 4 weeks of HALDOL.  I take benztropine to mitigate the side effects.  When I first started haldol I could definately notice the cognitive issues and it was a problem both with memory and concentration.  Nowadays, several months later, it's not as bad but the dosage was lowered.  I still have some trouble reading books, but I can read magazine articles and stuff.  I think the main problem was that I was on too much for the first 2 months.
