Wonderful.Cheese
Well. Risperdal is helping me come down back to earth. But it makes me so damn hungry. Please tell me this will go away! I get actual hunger pangs, like I need to eat NOW hunger pangs. I am way over eating. My muscles are also kind of, not sore, but stiff I guess? Should I stop taking it? iaawal
Hey Cheese, I think you know the answer to this. But don't stop taking it without talking to your pdoc first. You have to weight the benefits vs the side effects. Talk to your pdoc. There are meds you can take for the hunger and meds you can take for the stiffness. IIRC, someone on here takes risperdal only when he/she needs it. Can you ask your pdoc if you can continue taking it until you're not manic out your ass and then switch to another AAP or AP? Or you can ask that he messes with the dose.
jt07
I don't think you should even be considering stopping it so soon after a major manic episode. Whether it will be a long term med or not is a different question altogether, but right now you are not yet stable enough and need it. Give it some time and then you can discuss getting off with your pdoc.
Southern Discomfort
Like iaawal said, I don't think anyone can tell you anything you don't already know. If I were you however, I think I'd of course see your prescriber first and if they don't already suggest it (which is unlikely), suggest trying a lower dose. You might not necessarily need to stay at the same dose you started with. I've had food cravings since starting mine (which is partly good because I'm a few stone underweight), I've been trying to resist - not outright, but being careful just how much more I'm eating; I really don't want to be overweight. I've switched to using skimmed milk, eating fruit. And just drinking water. I don't really care too much about eating healthy per say, it's more like just giving my stomach something to fill the void and make it shut the hell up. (I don't get much enjoyment out of eating). Rabbit37
When I would accidentally skip a dose of risperdal,it was hell. Cold sweats. Please, don't stop abruptly taking it. Surely you can make it til Monday when your pdoc can answer? Maybe a lower dose is the solution.
surreal
Do you think Cogentin or something like it might help?
koa
I hated risperdal. It made me impotent and I gained like 30 pounds on it. But I stayed on it for 3 or 4 years because I needed to... It made me gain weight at a slower rate than other aap's I tried, it was generic, not overly sedating, and it worked for psychosis/paranoia for me. I stayed on it long enough for a better option to present itself, which was Latuda for me, and I was on that for a long time until my insurance stopped paying for it. Thankfully by that time my pdoc had agreed to work with me to taper off. What I'm saying is that you definitely need to stay on risperdal as prescribed when you are this symptomatic. Sometimes you just have to suck it up. Eating too much is better than crashing from mania/psychosis, etc. You may not need to stay on it long enough to gain a significant amount of weight. And you can always lose weight when you're well again. If the side effects of risperdal are so bad for you that it is making it so you are having trouble taking the medication as prescribed, you need to call your doctor ASAP. Maybe you can get an appointment and have him or her switch you to a different med. In the mean time please don't stop taking risperdal. You pretty much never want to stop taking a med unless it is causing you to have an allergic reaction or seizures or something like that. You might look into foods that you can eat that will satisfy hunger that aren't caloric. From what I read fats are better calories than carbs for people on AAP's because they can do something weird to your metabolism, if that helps. Eating plant based foods with lots of fiber will fill you up without the calories. Edited May 17, 2015 by koa
Gearhead
Cheese, you're nowhere near stable enough to stop taking your AP. I think you know that. You say in your blog that you're still aggitated, and you don't sound like yourself. Please don't make any foolish choices. At least wait until you can talk to your doctor about a suitable replacement-although jumping from medication to medication is bad for you, too. I think you should stick it out with Risperdal. Wonderful.Cheese
Ok. I will keep taking the risperdal. I am stopping Flonase. I didn't realize it was a steroid. I had no issues with hunger pangs when first starting risperdal. But after a few sets on it (when I started the Flonase) I got the severe hunger. GP said cortisone shot but no thanks. That's just another steroid. Sorry I started a new topic in allergy forum. Sorry for rambling.
Wonderful.Cheese
And thanks koa for the ideas. I have bought bulk bags of frozen veggies. I think I will go to those of I feel hunger pangs after just eating. If ridperdal is truly the cause. I'm starting to suspect all the damn allergy pills or sprays. Ugh. jt07
Said more artfully than I said it: Cheese, you're nowhere near stable enough to stop taking your AP. I think you know that. Cheese, I'm glad you are sticking with the Risperdal. You will not gain that much in a few days/weeks until you and your doctor decide what is best to do. But please don't stop it on your own. I don't know anything about allergy meds though since I don't have allergies. Sorry about that.
Wonderful.Cheese
Thanks jt. I have ab appointment with GP tomorrow to discuss allergy stuff. So it will be ok. I just have too many questions for an email thing to GP. And oddly I am not ravished like I was for the last bit of days. Today I did eat a lot but not like way over board. I don't have hunger pangs right after eating. Weird. I don't get it at all.
iaawal
I also can't speak for the allergy pills, I have allergy meds but I don't take them. I recently bought a few bags of frozen veggies. Because I know I'm lazy so I decided to prepare them all at once and keep some in the fridge. The way I did was I dumped the bag in a giant bowl (I used a salad spinner). I microwaved a bit of water (like 1/8 of a cup) and dumped it in there and shook it around so they'd separate. Then I put in some olive oil and put in minced garlic (I have a giant container of it), ground pepper, onion powder, sage, nutmeg, black pepper, sea salt and something else can't remember. Then I spread it on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and baked it at 425 for about 40 minutes and then at the end sprinkled parmesan cheese. Yummy!! (FYI you could do it for less, I just like my veggies soft). Edited May 17, 2015 by iaawal
surreal
The veggies are a good idea. I buy those single-serve packs of baby carrots and nibble on those straight out of the bag. They usually do the trick for me for those annoying hunger pangs or cravings.
