Fluffypinkbunny
I've been wanting to get off of Ambien, for some time. I've been on it for several months now. Last night I started 5mg Melatonin and I slept great. Never thought I'd be able to sleep without the Ambien. On the Melatonin bottle it states that it's for short term use only? 1-4 days? If you take it, how long have you been on it? I was planning on taking it long term. I have trouble getting to sleep and without sleep, I'm a mess. Thanks in advance for your help! Fluffypinkbunny
Thank you! I know people who have been on it for some time as well. I see my pd tomorrow and will ask him about it.
lifequake
I have been taking it nightly for six months straight. I have taken lower doses in the past for longer stretches, too.

iaawal
My mom's also taken it for years but she doesn't take it every night, only a few times a week I think sometimes less.
melissaw72
Does your DR know you want to go off of the ambien, and are trying the melatonin? If not, I'd run it by him/her.
Fluffypinkbunny
He doesn't know yet. Old pd had me on the Ambien. I'm going to talk with him about it today.

San
Glad it works for you, Fluffy, and glad your doc gave the green light. It helped me for a while, but eventually pooped out. I took 3mg to start, and went up to 20mg (as directed by pdoc at the time) but it just stopped working after months. While I was IP, you could request melatonin at night if you couldn't sleep or didn't have an rx for a sleep med. The doc had to okay it first, then the nurses could give it to patients PRN. The doc's put PRN's on patients files without needing to be asked for them, melatonin was one of them, and for example, I could have up to 2mg of Ativan a day, if needed, but I never had to ask my pdoc, he just wrote it down on admission. It occurs naturally in the body IIRC, and is very safe.
melissaw72
Just wanted to say that sometimes when taking melatonin, less can work better than more. I've read that here on CB, and the same happened with me. I couldn't continue it because of side effects, but I remember when I tried the lower dose it seemed to do more than when I was on the higher dose.
