I find it sedating (a lot of people find it stimulating). I have gained weight. I think part is that I am not as active because I am so tired. I have heard other people talk of weight gain, also. I still take it, but I have lost some weight by counting calories. I need to get back to that. I don't have a good sense of when to stop eating without keeping track. There are apps that help.

I have gained a little since I've been on it, but honestly, some of my other meds are far, far worse offenders. I wouldn't expect the weight to go away without diet and exercise because, at the end of the day, you've got to have a calorie deficit to lose weight, and that is true no matter how healthy your diet is.

Some people gain weight on certain meds without altering their eating habits. They may or may not lose weight when the medication is discontinued. The calories in/out model fails to explain that, as well as why calorie surpluses or deficits often fail to deliver the predicted results.

For me, lithium made me gain weight, which I lost after switching to Abilify. My eating and drinking habits were the same on both meds. I continue to lose more weight on Abilify now, but that is the result of not drinking.

I had written out a long detailed response to that, but I don't want to derail this thread.

To the OP, many people do not gain weight on Abilify. It is not considered a big weight gainer among the AAPs.

If you haven't taken it. It is one that for me doesn't really feel strong (there are some meds I physically feel when I take them). It works well for me. And, isn't really known for weight gain.

I think there is a little weight gain with Abilify, but it is the most weight neutral of the antipsychotics.  If you need an antipsychotic and you don't want to end up huge, it's got to be Abilify!

Unfortunately I did gain weight on Abilify, about 8 pounds in one month. And I definitely wasn't eating more or exercising less, because I keep food and exercise journals. I switched to Latuda, thinking that might be better, and gained another 5 pounds! I've been off antipsychotics since late last fall but I've only been able to lose about 2 pounds in that time. It's been brutal.
