Benzos and Drug Tests

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to find out if it's just my pdoc that does this, or if other people has experienced this. She is the first doctor that I've seen that has done this. Everytime I go to her office, which is every 2-4 weeks, she requires me to take a drug test because I'm on benzos(Xanax). I also see a Pain Management doctor for my back, but he doesn't even drug test me. I just find it extremely odd that a psych doctor requires urine screens for being on benzos, as if it's some kind of gateway drug. Has anyone else been drug tested by their pdoc and what was the reason they gave for it?

I've only been drug tested when admitted IP.

Seems like your doc is looking to confirm that you are taking your prescription, rather than diverting it. You're on a medium-to-high dose of Xanax, which has a high street value. Maybe your pdoc has had other patients divert their benzo prescriptions and tests everyone. Or maybe it's because you're in pain management, but normally it would be the pain doctor/anesthesiologist that tests for narcotics.

That's so weird. I have never thought about that people not taking the medicine and selling it. I also signed a contract at my pain doc saying I was subject to random drug tests and pill counts, but I have never been called in for either. Only at my pdoc do I get drug tests on a regular basis. I always pop for certain things, Butrans(my pain patch), Opiates(from the Norco), and Benzos(from the Xanax). I wanna say there is something else that pops up, but I can't remember which medicine it is. The worst part about the whole drug testing thing to me is that the nurse comes in the bathroom and watches me. I have extreme "pee anxiety", so my bladder will be full, but I will sit there for 10 minutes and not be able to urinate because she's just staring at me.

The nurse did that! She even turned off the light! I'm going to take a Xanax before I go next week, because I was just mortified. My face was red because I was straining so hard for the pee to come out. Next week I'm going to try to be as relaxed as I can, and hopefully that will help.

never for benzo's. I have been advised more then once by a few pdocs that if an employer ever needs to give me a drug test, I should tell them I take wellbutrin because a lot of the time it shows up as a false positive for amphetemine.

I think your pdoc may just concerned about how much your taking. There is verry little demand on the streets for xanax, but a lot of demand for opiates! SO IMHO, I don't think she thinks your selling them, more likely she is looking for sIGNS OF NARCOTICS.

There is plenty of demand on the streets for benzos. Presumably the doctor knows about the narcotics that the OP is prescribed. The test is to make sure she's taking them and not selling them.

Also, I'm not sure about any drug tests in the US, but I've had to go to my doctor and get her to verify that what I tested positive for was something that she knew about. They may not take your word for it, as KillBytes seems to imply. But ymmv of course. Employers can only drug test where I am in very limited circumstances, so mine wasn't employer-mandated.

You are so very, very incorrect. There is a huge demand on the streets for any type of benzo.

As for your opinion, I'd hazard a guess and say that, once again, you are wrong. If the pdoc says they're looking for benzos then I'd imagine about 99.99% of the time, they're looking for benzos.

I totally with you on this one. As soon as people find out on my Xanax, they immediately ask if they can buy some. I'm like Excuse me?!? As for the drug test, they aren't looking for benzos specifically in the test, although it does pop up. They test for a wide range of drug from what I can tell from the results. Me being on Xanax(benzos) is the reason I was given for the drug testing.

KillBytes- what kind of narcotics are you talking about? I pop positive for opiates already from my Norco, and I'm not on any other drugs besides my prescriptions.

Any time you take a drug test for any reason, you need to fill out the accompanying paperwork completely and honestly. And provide the name/s and phone number/s of your doctor/s, because they are the ones who have to verify the legitimacy of your prescriptions.

I never fill out paperwork. I only signed a consent from. My pdoc knows where I get my pain medicine from. I just go into see her, and immediately after I go and give a urine screen,

IcePrincess, there is a world of difference before doctors talking to each other about your meds and a doctor talking to your employer about your meds. That's because of client confidentiality. All doctors have to be aware of confidentiality - which plays out quite differently with employers.

I could be wrong, as others seems to feel there is a great demand for benzo's on the street. I personaly being a street person, know what the totem pole is and opiates is on top. I suppose there wre those who may want benzo's for recreational use. I get no recreational use on them but I sure shitting do on opiates lol.

I still think your pdocks is more worried about what your TAKING then what you may be GIVING. You are her patient and primary concern.

I will concede there may be "some" demand for benzo's on the street. Just not on the top of the list. Specially when you can buy herion or 1/4 of the price. Just not street smart to bay $2 to $5 per pill for xanax when you can but more herion for cheaper price. Now barbiturates is a different story! I would even pay for that. But I would prefer opiates. That's just me I know. People are different. But I stand behind what I said about your pdoc is prolly more worried about what your taking and how much. :)

People also ask to buy my pain pills(Norco). I am also around a lot of street people. It seems that(at least in my area), people are more interested in Percocet and Oxycontin. The good thing is not many people around here know what Norco is. I'm sure if I said "a stronger version of Vicodin" that I'd be getting robbed. I never really got the whole excitement about opiates. I've been on the 20 Butrans patch and Norco for at least 2 years now, and I've never felt anywhere close to high. I just don't get it. Anytime I've ever taken Percocet after surgeries, all it did was make me   throw up all day. Honestly, I had no idea heroin was so cheap! I've never been involved with it, or used it, I've only seen it on TV and assumed it was expensive because of the way people steal and sell their selves to support their heroin habit.

My doctor has never done this. I would tell them to screw off too. If they treat me like a drug addict before I've even got my first script then, obviously, they don't trust me so why would I trust them. My wife's doctor, while not going so far, comes pretty close and I've told my wife to find someone new. This is a real hotspot for me since it insults my naracisstic pride (lol).

It seems the healthcare industry is more concerned with catching drug addicts than they are providing care.

Get a new doctor! and no, that is not doctor shopping, that is quality comparison.
