Smprz84
Does Abilify actually work for voices? I know Haldol does but it makes me feel apathetic.
jt07
Abilify is an antipsychotic and it should work, but my pdoc would say that Haldol is by far the better antipsychotic. In fact, he has said that Ability is a better antidepressant than antipsychotic. I don't know whether that's true or not because a lot of people have success with Abilify, but just be aware that Haldol is considered to be a very good antipsychotic. As with any med question, it's best to ask your psychiatrist for his/her opinion because s/he will be the one prescribing it.
Flash
I haven't had any auditory hallucinations since I've been on Abilify, except for when I didn't get enough sleep. Edited May 25, 2015 by Flash
melissaw72
Abilify worked for me to get rid of the voices (not 100% but considerably). Don't know what I'd do without it. But like Flash was saying, regardless to whether I am on the abilify or not, stress and lack of sleep will increase the amount of voices.
San
For me, abilify was hell. I had bad akathasia and nothing would stop it. There is a risk of EPS (akathasia, involuntary movements, etc) with Haldol, more than Abilify, but Haldol worked even at high doses (20mg a day) and I didn't have a lot of side effects. I took artane with the haldol, and didn't have the EPS. It wasn't sedating, either. Abilify made me nuttier.
Velvet Elvis
If you don't have problems with EPS (extreme restlessness and/or movement disorders), Haldol should have fewer side effects than any other AP on the market. I've been on several APs. There hasn't been a single one that hasn't sucked ass, but I'm still better off taking one than not. You might as well get used to the idea. These meds are going to suck but you have to take them anyway.
Siggmin
Abilify did nothing for me. It was like I wasn't even taking anything. Haldol has helped me emensley. I was almost completely voice free on it for a year. Now that I'm back on it, it works pretty well. I would say I prefer Haldol, and so does my pdoc. But as always, you'd have to ask your own pdoc. I have only taken haldol a few times for severe mania but it knocked me out along with either a benzo or zyprexa (whatever the hell they gave me). I like abilify. I'm not sure how well it helps me with the voices though. I still have them. Although I think they are better than they were. I am also on risperdal too now though.
