Please help! I sleep like I am in a coma and cannot hear anything and oversleep constantly!

Recommended Posts

I have been searching for some answers on my oversleeping! I have had this problem since a young teen through all sorts of changes in my life and NOTHING helps it! I really cannot wake up sometimes it is like I am in a coma and it is VERY scary!

I set 14 different alarms on my phone and I do not hear any of them, I do not shut them off either I seriously just do not hear anything when I am sleeping most times! I have had people call me 20+ times, text me a bunch of times to try to wake me up and yet I still do not hear anything!

I get very tired throughout the day at very random times and sometimes it is hard to keep my eyes open! I have had people come to my house and bang on the windows and doors right next to where I was sleeping and have heard NOTHING!

I've had friends tell me they would come in to my house while I was sleeping and they would try to wake me up but couldn't! They said I would talk to them a little answering their questions but I really didn't even remember them ever being there let alone talking to them!

Sometimes I even incorporate my alarm clock in to my dreams! My alarm will keep going off but instead of me waking up to it I would be dreaming that I'm in school and the bell for class is ringing (when I was younger) or later years the sound will resemble other things, like my work phone ringing, in my dreams! It's like I am actually awake going about my day in my dreams while in reality the alarm clock is sounding and I'm not waking up! It's a very weird thing to wake up and realize you were dreaming that whole time when it really seemed like you had started your day!

Most recently this passed Sunday I overslept for work again for the thousandth time! I did not hear any of my 14 alarms, the 12 phone calls from my 1 yr olds father, or the 4 texts from him asking where I was! I did not wake up until he came to my house and my landlord let him in and he came upstairs and physically shook me to wake me up! Didn't even know he was there until he woke me up!

A few months ago at work I was working a night shift and I fell asleep there because I couldn't keep my eyes open anymore! I set alarms on my cell phone in half hour intervals while at work in case I do fall asleep accidentally! The other house called like they were supposed to at 5am to check in and I didn't answer (even though the work phone was right next to my head) they called over 20 times and then got worried and sent a staff from another house to check on me! That staff could see me sleeping sitting up in the recliner RIGHT NEXT TO THE GLASS SLIDING DOOR! He banged and yelled and banged some more to try to wake me up but could not get me to wake up! I seriously did not even know he was there! They called a few more times after that, maybe an hour or so after he had been there, I finally heard the phone and answered! He was freaking out saying he thought I was dead and told me that he had been there and how I slept through EVERYTHING!

This is very scary to me because it happens a lot! I just don't hear anything I am seriously in a coma! I am so afraid that a fire alarm will go off or something dangerous happens and I will just sleep through it! I could sleep for a normal 8-10 hours and still be tired through the day and want to close my eyes then sleep like I am in a coma!

I have never had a sleep study done which I really would like to have done but I honestly cannot find ANYTHING medical to explain why this happens other than the possibility of narcolepsy but that doesn't seem like it would really apply to this? I am so tired of this it seriously makes me so angry and upset when it happens because everyone around me thinks I just don't want to wake up when in reality I just CANT!

Sorry if this post is all over the place! I just copied and pasted my reply to someone else who was having this problem also on this board because I didn't want to have to type it all over again! Their post was from a few years ago so I realized I might not get a reply there and thought it best to just create my own post! Hope someone can help!

I couldn't read the whole post,, but from what I did read, it sounds like you might benefit from a sleep study.

They put electrodes on your head, and can see what stages of sleep your brain is throughout the night.

For instance, I have almost constant "alpha-wave intrusions" that cause me to wake up for an instant.  This makes it so that I'm almost always in a light sleep, and don't get a good deep sleep, which causes me to sleep for 10-11 hours.

They will also look into seeing if you have sleep apnea, but that was never a concern for me.

Sorry about that! I was technically working when I google searched, from my phone, oversleeping and came across this board...I am very new at this!

I came across someone else on here who was having a very similar issue and created an account so that I could comment on her post, which I had to do very quickly so I could get back to work! Lol

I just copied my reply to her post and pasted it here....which is why it is such a mess! I will try not to ramble as much!  The majority of it was because of what her post entailed so that she could see my problem was exactly like her own! Sorry you had such a hard time reading it!!!

Dilemma:

Thanks for your suggestion and input! I have been thinking of having a sleep study done but I was concerned that it might be a waste of time since it does not happen every night! I would say it happens more often than not but with my luck who knows. I'll definitely look in to it!

I was really hoping someone on here has the same problem and has gotten some answers as to what causes it that they could share with me! At least then I would have an idea of what I am dealing with and a suggestion for the doctor when I finally go see one!

Thanks again!

I am very new at this, can someone explain to me how to actually reply to your replies? I am not sure if my replies to people who have replied to my original post will even be seen if I just reply to my post! I see others replying to comments by quoting theirs before their reply to them! Not sure how to do that and I only use my cell phone for the Internet so I am not sure if it would look different than using an actual computer? Thanks so much!

Biondie,

It might help those if us with short attention spans and trouble reading if you would break that wall of text into paragraphs.

I just edited the post hope it's a little easier to read! Also, I previously replied to your comment but did not quote it first. Like I said before, I am very new to this! Not sure if quoting your reply notifies you that I've replied or if there really isn't a difference but I guess I'll learn more as I use the site! Thanks again!

Oh yup. This is me, I'm sure my neighbors hate me one of my alarms doesn't stop unless you physically stop it so military trumpet sounds at full volume have gone on for hours. Bf banned the alarm clocks I would put because it'd never wake me up and it'd just wake him up every few minutes (he's a light sleeper, he'd wake up to very quite music as his alarm versus my extremely loud ones). So for 2 years I didn't really have an alarm clock besides him tossing the cat on me, holding his food over my face, spraying water, shaking, pushing me off the bed... you get the picture. His alarm clock came with a vibrating thing that you put under the pillow, he never used it but we decided to try it for me. It just woke him up.

Now that he's out of the country, I'm left alone to wake myself up. The cat alarm doesn't really work on me (although poop 3 feet away from me sure as hell woke me up, he might have chosen that spot on the carpet on purpose).

I've always slept like I was in a coma too, my mom would always comment on it. She once yelled at some people lurking outside my window in the middle of the night, right next to me, and I did not wake up. Bf would also comment on it too. I also respond to questions when people try to wake me up. I haven't been able to make it to work by 8AM ever since bf left to vet school. He was my ride and he had school/work in the mornings so he'd force me to get up. Last week I got to work past noon.

Today I got to work just a bit before noon. Yesterday I was tired and told my boss I was taking a personal day because I couldn't manage to get up but said I'd still be on skype for the meeting at noon and ended up sleeping through it. Good thing is my boss once said he doesn't care what time I work or how many hours I work because I get the job done so that's good.

I'm also considering getting a sleep study done once my insurance card gets issued. It'd be a good idea for you too. Having a heavy sleep is normal, but coma is not. I don't know how to fix it. And this has always happened even before psych meds.

On the plus side since I oversleep and am always rushed I now know how to get ready (shower included, minus the hair that's a once a week thing) in less than 10 minutes. Bf would take longer. Unless I fell asleep in the shower, then it'd take me longer depending on when someone would notice and would wake me up.
