ananke
Essentially I had three customers yell at me in the space of an hour. Apparently people think if they are passive aggressive enough, things will magically happen to them. We have a rule that, an hour before we close, we stop letting people in to allow staff to tidy up. But of course, there are always people who will push and whine and complain until they get their way. I almost had a panic attack when this one guy kept on saying over and over that this was unfair and our rules were 'stupid' and I was unprofessional and we didn't run a good business. Rules exist for a reason assholes. To protect you, the customer, but also to protect me, the minimum wage sucker who wipes up after you and tries her best. My god. I have honestly never had a day like today. Nothing like strangers yelling at you to trigger every anxiety disorder you have...Also a lady tried to bring in a whole bunch of Starbucks coffees, because she claimed her friend 'didn't like our milk'. Does anyone else in the service industry get this?? Do people walk into McDonalds with KFC because they like the tables better? We are a cafe! I have a legal responsibility over the food and beverages we serve, but apart from that, this is how I make my money. Seriously. How is this a hard thing to understand. jt07
That sounds pretty much like a nightmare. Some people simply don't care about rules nor are they considerate enough to think what their actions do to people who are working their butts off just trying to make a living and provide them service. I'm sorry you had to go through that.
ananke
The worst thing is, with one exception, I all totally let them get away with it. I let them come in even though it was past last entry because they were so persistent and rude. I'm a pushover. Even the guy who I insisted had to leave not only stayed until closing anyway, but also didn't pay a penny. And he asked for my name so he could complain to my boss.My boss was pretty cool about it (although this whole thing made me realise how inadequately I've been trained, which is not at all) so I don't think I'll be in much trouble... but it worries me that this might get on social media or in some other way we'll be publicly shamed. It happens all the time. People tweet that someone in their local supermarket was rude to them and bam, someone loses their job.
jt07
But you weren't rude to them You let them get away with it. I don't think you have anything to worry about. I do agree that this whole social media thing sometimes gets out of hand. Nothing is private anymore.
saintalto
Food service is the worst when you are at minimum wage. I am sorry you have to deal with that hell. I remember the one of the most irritating things when I was working food service was people who ordered their food/drinks, ate about half of it, then brought it back after 10 long minutes of eating without incident to say it was terrible and that they wanted a refund. This happened so much, people thinking they could eat their fill (the food servings were massive so half is like a normal portion anyway) then get their money back by complaining. Easy way to get a free meal... and most the time it worked because you can't fight with a customer.
melissaw72
OP ... That totally sucks. If it happens again, is someone else there who could help you handle the ass holes like that? Like with 2 people saying no to one of the jerks, maybe they'd actually listen and leave.
ananke
Being on the internet is such a strange thing... on one hand you can connect with whoever you like and socialise at your own pace, but on the other its far too easy to lose all sense of privacy and security. Why am I staying and earning minimum when I could earn even a couple of pounds more anywhere else? This is just not worth it. God they sound like dicks. Not had that much, but I've definitely had people who just wanted to complain so they could get freebies. People are so indifferent sometimes. My coworker was there with me, but she's not even 19. We both talked to two of the customers, who clearly decided that two young women weren't much of a threat. WinterRosie
I post on Not Always Right sometimes when I've had a particularly terrible day. And reading everyone else's stories helps me out, too. People pretty much suck. I think it's the sense of entitlement. It's trickier when cash is involved.
ananke
It's a culture of 'these people are here to serve you on bended knee and do anything to please you' rather than 'we're all just trying to get on with our lives, do you want chocolate sprinkles or not?' I like the look of this website though...
crtclms
Wow, we're really nice customers. The only thing we've ever complained about was an Indian Restaurant that took 2 hours to serve us 2 courses. Then we just wrote on the bill, "The food's great, but life's too short." But we tipped.
Stickler
Want to borrow this?* hands over Megabitch Supersuit *...You are currently easy to push over. You are not happy about this. You are in a really good position to practice being politely assertive to arrogant, entitled douchebags in such a way as to not get oneself in trouble. That's a skill you need, I think?Put your CV's out, though, because it still sucks. ananke
I am sufficiently mega-bitchy, what I lack is an actual backbone to start doing things about it. I am afraid to say I have always been a pushover (I've gotten a lot better, believe it or not). Nothing I do feels like the right thing anyway, even if I was in a position of legitimate influence. I do need to get out of here though. Daily panic attacks are not something I want to go through again.Honestly I only started tipping after my first job. English people are terrible, terrible tippers. I'm talking pennies that they have lying around at the bottom of their wallet, if you get a tip at all (which, you don't). 2 hours is ridiculously long. I hope they gave you a discount.
