IcePrincess88
Once again, I wasn't sure where to put this, but here I go: I have a question about prescription diet pills. I have a appointment with my PCP on Monday and I'm considering asking to be put on some. Is there some kind of weight/BMI requirements to be placed on a prescription diet medication? If so, what is it? I'm just wondering how they determine if you can or can not be put on such medication.
in_media_res
I read something that said they're typically only prescribed if your BMI is above 30, but I doubt that's any kind of hard and fast rule.Make sure your PCP is fully aware of the meds you're already on -- some of the prescription weight loss meds contain psychotropic meds that can interact with things you're already taking, with adverse results. crtclms
I'm moving this to Miscellaneous Meds.

I just read the whole article. I think I'd like Qsymia. Of course I'd have to stop taking Topamax since Qsymia contains Topamax. We'll see what the doctor says on Monday! IcePrincess88
It appears that I have run into a huge bump in the road. While looking up different prescription diet pills last night, one website mentioned some insurances not covering weight loss drugs. So I did some more research into what Medicaid will cover. I am living in one of the states that Medicaid will not pay for prescription diet pills under any circumstances. There are other states that Medicaid will pay for it if you meet certain criteria: such as BMI>30, or BMI>27 with a weight related health issue. Thank you North Carolina! I'm still going to ask tommorow and see if there's any generic forms that I could afford on my own.

There is a generic for several of the drugs that don't cost much--phentermine is one of them. I still think it's a horrible idea though. I don't plan on being on them long term. Plus I'm way more on the depressed side, and have been for quite some time. Even with the "Swellbutrin" people speak so highly of, I'm still just down. Maybe it'd be a good idea to bring me up some. Not to full blown mania, but just enough so I'm out of this damn depression. My depression is also correlated with the fact that I've gained so much weight. I'm sure I'll be a lot happier when I lose some weight.
Always Unstable
I'm BP 1 too and my BMI is 23. My pdoc wouldn't give me diet pills, he gave me a leaflet for a weight loss clinic that apparently he went to and worked really well. So I made my own damn diet. BMI of 23 is in the 'normal'/healthy range, why would they give you diet pills for that? I can see why they would not.
IcePrincess88
I received no diet pills today. I didn't even bring it up because it was the first time I've seen her and she was going through my entire medical history. Then she told me I had to get blood work done, and I had an anxiety attack and didn't listen much after that. They're checking my thyroid again now that I'm back on medication for it, and also other routine things like iron and calcium levels. I did however finally get a referral to a cardiologist about my Tachycardia.
