Penguin
So a couple of months ago I started Prolixin, my first time on a non-atypical antipsychotic. I love it because it helps me so much and doesn't have me feeling like a zombie like the atypicals do. Well, lately I have been a bit irritable and volatile, so my pdoc is trying me on Trileptal. I am supposed to take 150 mg in the morning and 150 at night to start, so far I am only taking the 150 at night because when I wake up I have the zombie feeling again. I used to pop out of bed after 6-7 hours of sleep, ready to go. Now I sleep maybe 10 hours and waking up means lying there staring at the ceiling for 15 minutes, then stumbling out of bed and I am not able to really do anything until I have had several cups of coffee. I am going to keep taking it and increase my dose as he wants me to, seeing if this improves, but I have a feeling it will only get worse when I up my dose and add the morning dose. It reminds me of atypicals. I want to know, is there a mood stabilizer that doesn't have this effect?
Chantho
I was on Lamictal, and it didn't sedate me. Nor did it make me an emotional zombie.
rowan77
I am on both Lithium and Lamictal. Neither of these medications sedate me or cause me to feel like a zombie. In fact they cause virtually no side effects for me
jt07
I take Lamictal and Tegretol and they don't zombify me. There's always lithium too.
Penguin
I really want to try lamictal but when i started it i got a rash on my forehead so i went off... Although since then it has happened again to a lesser extent so it may be an unrelated medical thing? Thinking maybe i could give it another go. Flash
Lithium didn't zombify me. Abilify is another story. I am always kind of out of it, have difficulty concentrating, and my memory is just awful. But it got rid of the sads and most of the psychosis, so I am thankful for that. mcjimjam
Neither Lithium nor Lamictal have made me a zombie. I prefer lithium. For me it is more effective and has fewer side-effects than lamictal.
Always Unstable
Like others have suggested Lithium is great! Didn't have much luck with Lamictal but it also didn't sedate me either.
melissaw72
Lamictal never made me a zombie.I really want to try lamictal but when i started it i got a rash on my forehead so i went off... Although since then it has happened again to a lesser extent so it may be an unrelated medical thing? Thinking maybe i could give it another go.^In bold. Definitely get checked for ANY rash you have, but lamictal can give rashes that are NOT "The Rash." Did you talk to your pdoc when you got this rash? Or did you go off this med by yourself? rachael
Lithium isn't zombifying me, neither did Depakote. Lithium also happens to work really well.

Gearhead
Lamictal works for me. Geodon made me a zombie, and lithium did too, though to a lesser extent. You won't know what works for you until you try.

He was a crappy doctor and when I told him I got some weird rash on my forehead and wanted to go off lamictal he just said "okay" and didn't have any comment. melissaw72
If you do give the lamictal another go, maybe if you get a rash of some kind again you can run the rash by your GP and see him/her (not pdoc). Your GP might know more about stuff than your pdoc does, and the rash may not have anything to do with the lamictal. But definitely always get the rashes checked. crtclms
Another fan of Lamictal and lithium. Lithium definitely boosted the effect of my Lamictal, as well as being a great med in and of itself.I haven't been foggy on any MS though: Depakote, Tegretol, Neurontin, Zonegran (okay, some word finding problems, but not doped up), Lamictal, or lithium. So it just goes to show. Something.
melissaw72
You won't know what works for you until you try.^^I think this is what it all comes down to. Some people tolerate meds, others don't. Suggestions are always helpful, but you won't know what works until you give a med a try.
