revv
I was wondering if anyone has had any experience taking benadryl (Over the counter sleeping pill) for anorgasmia specifically? I am on abilify 10mg and have problems with my orgasm intensity because of the abilify and am wondering if anyone here has any experience or thoughts about this?I believe 50-150mg dose would be needed but am not entirely sure since theres is very few research about it. jt07
What makes you think that Benadryl would help? I've never heard of using Benadryl for that purpose.Moving to side effects forum.

jt07
I've taken a lot of Benadryl in my life, and I have never noticed this effect. I was on 50 mg of Benadryl for a several years as a sleep aid. I took a lot more than that when I was titrating up on Lamictal to ease the anxiety. I never noticed anything.I'm surprised you are having a problem on Abilify. It generally isn't known for causing sexual difficulties.
vanderk
Chasing a medicinal augmentation of orgasm. What could possibly go wrong?Take enough Benedryl and you could induce an anticholigenic delirium. Not good.

San
Benadryl at doses of around 150mg have been known to cause psychosis. This includes people that do not have previous psychosis.Benadryl is also not a sleeping pill. It's an antihistamine, that has a side effect of drowsiness in the original version. There are also non-drowsy versions, as well, which can trigger mania due to the active ingredient, which has the remote possibility of serotonin syndrome if you take an antidepressant in the SSRI or SNRI family, and take enough of it for long enough.I've never heard of it helping orgasm or sex. Abilify is not noted to cause sexual dysfunction. In my experience, it did not, and I was also taking an SSRI (lexapro), which is more likely to cause sexual dysfunction than Abilify. But even on both (and other things) I still had a sex drive and could reach orgasm.. I was on 10mg but it gave me bad akathasia. I actually took benadyl for the akathasia for a little while, but it didn't help. You may say 50-150mg isn't enough to "go insane", but 150mg is where people have reported psychosis. You'd probably be best talking to a doctor about sex drive/performance and whatnot, than trying an OTC "remedy". Or at least your pharmacist, because they know your meds, background, and interactions. A good pharmacist is very useful, and trained to know these things. dragonfly23
I dont know your DX or current meds. For some (and there are many topics regarding it in the forums under side effects) lamictal increases both sex drive and quality of orgasm for some. However, I dont believe it would ever be prescribed to aid in sexual function. I second the thought of discussing this with your prescribing doctor. I have discussed with mine and he has taken it quite seriously as for me it is not an acceptable side effect.
