wellbutrin and high blood pressure

Recommended Posts

Can wellbutrinsr100mg cause High blood pressure my blood pressure was fairly normal before taking Wellbutrin when I took it the other morning my blood pressure was sky high and its never ever been that high it was 187/80 and usually its 120s or mid 120s over 77 which is normal.I think I may quit the Wellbutrin and see if it was the cause of my blood pressure going up.Or should I stay on it until I see my Dr. the 23rd and see what he says.At first I thought it could be my Thyroid causing my blood pressure to go up I never thought it was the wellbutrin I haven't taken it today and my blood pressure was low that's what makes me now think its the wellbutrin that was the only side effect I noticed with the wellbutrin was the high blood pressure no weight gain or loss for that matter will know if my thyroid is causing the weight  problem in a few days.Had blood work done to test my thyroid will post the results when I see my Dr the 23rd I may or may not have to take medicine for my thyroid if its not working or if its a underactive thyroid.

Wellbutrin can increase blood pressure, but that is a HUGE jump. When I took Wellbutrin, I think my blood pressure went up maybe 5 points. I wouldn't stop taking the Wellbutrin without the advice of your pdoc, but I do suggest that you get an appointment with your GP as soon as possible to get to the bottom of that spike. I know you have an appointment coming up, but you really need to get looked at sooner. That kind of blood pressure spike can be dangerous.

Edit: 100 mg of Wellbutrin is a very low dose to cause that kind of a spike. Next time something like that happens, I recommend that you go to the ER or to urgent care to get examined.

In short, yes. From the prescribing information:

  1. In clinical practice, hypertension, in some cases severe, requiring acute treatment, has been reported in patients receiving bupropion alone and in combination with nicotine replacement therapy. These events have been observed in both patients with and without evidence of preexisting hypertension.

When I took Wellbutrin, I experienced an overall rise in blood pressure - I don't recall the absolute numbers, but it was significant enough to require independent treatment of the hypertension by my internist. The idiot psychiatrist who'd prescribed it denied the Wellbutrin was responsible and couldn't possibly have anything to do with the problem. However, after abandoning the medication (it didn't work), my blood pressure returned to normal. Nothing else had changed.

Like jt07, I would encourage you to consult with your GP as soon as possible for advice and reference the prescribing information.

Good luck.

My blood pressure was good until I stopped Wellbutrin. Now I am all over the place, and spike at scary levels. My pnurse and nurse practitioner have decided that since my diastolic number is always good, that the spikes are from anxiety. I am skeptical, but I went in for a special checkup, and that is what my nurse practitioner told me.

Never stop medications without consulting with your doctor first.

That is a dangerous blood pressure.  Don't stop taking anything without telling your doctor but get into see her/him asap and get that under control.  My E-

cardiac doc pumped up a blood pressure cuff to what my BP was before meds and he said "This is how your veins feel when you have high BP.   160 hurts.   180?  Yikes! ! !
