confused
I was going to blog but my iPad is acting wonky so this seemed like the next best place My cousins were visiting from outside of Pittsburgh and were staying at a nice place in Newport Beach. My uncle (70ish) and cousin's daughter (20s) were walking and jaywalked. It was a dangerous place to walk. The police stopped them. That I understand. The officer made them get down on the ground while he waited for back up. He kept asking where the dope was and questioning why my uncle had so many gift cards. They kept asking the girl her parents names and then they would say "stop lying to us" and telling them they would be arrested. They ended up with a citation. I know it could have been much worse, they were scared but not hurt. My uncle won't be visiting us anytime again soon.

melissaw72
I agree with sylvan about getting a lawyer. Was there any reason to think one of them was on dope? Was anyone behaving in a "weird" way, for the police to keep questioning them?
confused
No. It is a rich neighborhood and they are from the country and pretty obviously aren't from around here, but it is a vacation area. The police should be used to seeing travelers.theh are back home now. I don't think they want to go to court.I would like to inform someone who could keep this from happening again. melissaw72
I would like to inform someone who could keep this from happening again.Could you call the police station and talk to the top police guy (IDK the name) there? If not I'd call the Town Hall, explaining the situation (briefly), then ask them who you should call. If I have no idea who to call here I just call the Town Hall and they'll connect me to the right person to talk to.
confused
I am not fond of phones. I tweeted the police dept and e mailed the chamber of commerce.thanks for the assurance this was excessive. I don't know anymore.
crtclms
Is there a citizen oversight committee. That was outrageous.California gives a lot of citations for jay walking, but I've never heard of such asshole-ish behavior on the part of the cops citing a jaywalker before. I don't know anymore. How about writing and sending a letter, and mailing it to police and/or Town Hall (or wherever)? If I were to write a letter to someone like about things that happened to you (or whatever), I would mail it and get a signature back which tells you the person got it. (Otherwise it could be "lost in the mail" or "they didn't get the letter." Just make sure to keep copies for your self of every thing you write. Some people hate paper trails. Rabbit37
I really don't understand what, or how, the police force has gone horribly wrong. Maybe I'm just being naive, I don't get it. Why the excessive force, in what seems like all of a sudden over the past few years? Did they all get a memo, saying "have at 'em"? My BIL was in law enforcement once, way back in the early 80's. I briefly dated one of his colleagues. Nicest guy in the world, as were his law enforcement brothers. Just don't get it.

I looked up Baker Act, and it seems like that is an-only-Florida thing that can be used on people. Is that true?
confused
It is a 72 hour hold. They call it different things depending on where you live. Here it is a 5150.
crtclms
The Baker Act is used in Utah, and I'm *pretty sure* in CA. I remember in law school saying that someone was "Bakered," but it may have been a shorthand rather than its real name.
