Using mental illness as an insult

Earlier this year, Mike Huckabee said Supreme Court Justice was schizophrenic.  

I agree Carson has some off the wall ideas, but I don't like this. Can't they come up with other adjectives?

Sure they could, but that would require them to actually do some work rather than falling back on the oldest, easiest target in the book.

You can't say anything negative about minorities, you can't say anything negative about other cultures/religions, you can't say anything negative about disabled people--we're the only ones that it's acceptable to stigmatize. So of course the media are going to go with that. It's safe and won't get them into trouble.

I don't know what Carson has or hasn't said, so I can't speculate on his state of health. But you also have to take into account the media's bias and their interest in making shocking headlines rather than actually doing journalism.

I just think Ben Carson proves you can be good at once thing (Brain Surgery) and suck at everything else (doesn't believe in evolution, thinks that if a Muslim became president, it would mean Shariah law, etc). People can't grasp that, so they say he is crazy. I'd be willing to go with Idiot Savant.
