Chrisja1987
I've currently been in what I think is a mixed state since mid/end sept 2015. But currently what I'm going through is straight jacket worthy. It seems when I drink even moderate amounts of caffeine sometimes it seems to make me go nuts. Such as right now. It's messed up though half the time I have the normal reaction from it you'd expect.. Right now My mind is flying, I can't sit still, I feel like... I don't know unstoppable really. I could crush bricks with my head type situation. Any who this can't be normal. I'm laughing as I type this. 1 hour ok I was so depressed I almost burst into tears. I used to doubt my bipolar diagnosis for years. I don't anymore. Dose caffeine make your manias/hypos/mixes worse???
sugarsugar
Yes. I can drink one cup of coffee, and no caffeine sodas, that's it. If I feel a bit manic I skip it. I think some of us have to be careful. I used to live on coffee and sugar (and alcohol, when I still drank it), when undiagnosed manic/hypomanic. Not good. I take diet pills(over the counter) too and that makes it even worse because of the large dose of caffeine that is in them. I'm also a huge fan of Pepsi Max, and it has more caffeine than Mountain Dew.
The Right Honourable Jimmy
I'm used to very high levels of caffeine since adolescence. Drinkin two redbuls is like drinking water to me so I'll disagree and agree at the same time. If you're not used to caffeine..I'm pretty sure it wouldn't improve anything. However I still think that if it will make your manias worse..it will only be while the caffeine is in your system.

saintalto
Absolutely no caffeine for me during a mixed episode. When symptoms are more under control, I can safely have one cup of weak coffee in the morning.
Rabbit37
When hypomanic, or mixed, I'm like fuck yeah! By the time mania hits, I'm self-medicating with alcohol. Like coffee with a tremendous wallop of 151 rum.
melissaw72
Yes. Having caffeine when hypo/manic makes my heart race and I am more alert, jittery/nervous-like. I can get a lot of stuff done with caffeine, but it is a very uncomfortable feeling. So I don't drink caffeine at all now, hypo/manic or not. aura
Yes. I drink a lot of coffee and diet coke when manic. I don't get much of a buzz in the short term, but it helps me sleep less and thus worsens the mania in the long term.
helenllama
Coffee/caffeine has the opposite effect on me. It just relaxes me or sends to sleep.
melissaw72
One thing I just thought of, is that drinking caffeine gives me a different reaction than taking Excedrin (contains caffeine) does. Drinking caffeine makes me jittery and all, but when I take Excedrin, it doesn't affect me at all except get rid of the headache.
dancesintherain
If I'm symptom-free/not in an episode, I can handle a fair amount of caffeine (think a medium-sized caffeinated coffee beverage and a bottle of soda) and be perfectly fine. If I'm at all off-kilter...and honestly it can be in either direction (up or down), it lead to the feelings/symptoms that Melissa described. Gearhead
Even when I'm not symptomatic, I can't drink things that are caffeinated. It's like a tiny mini-mania. When I'm hypo or manic or god forbid in a mixed state, caffeine is totally verboten.
dragonfly23
I make no changes to my coffee intake while manic or mixed. Never really thought about it.
