jt07
My own experience with Depakote was not very positive, but I can't say that it was typical since I have unipolar depression and many people are helped by Depakote. If you think you are overmedicated, could you call your pdoc and perhaps get in to see him/her? Maybe explain how you are feeling. I empathize because sedation is the one side effect that I loathe. confused
The number of meds isn't as significant as how they help and side effects. Depakote works wonders for me. A pdoc switched me to lamictal because he felt it had less side effects but I wouldn't mind going back on depakote. It slowed my thoughts down in a good way. But, you are on a lot of sedating medications. I have never taken haldol, but I have the others. I can chat in the chat room Edited January 11, 2016 by confused
The Right Honourable Jimmy
Depakote is really an anti-manic drug but helps a little bit with depression from what I've heard. I do take it if its valporic acid (depakote is the brand name of it in the UK) we are talking about, it never helped me a lot with the lows but it helped with the highs and to maintain my mood stable . However what really helped lifting my mood before Christmas was my atypical anti-psychotic. There must be a reason why your doctor has given you depakote (are you bipolar?) for depression. On the topic of sedation, I never found it sedating to be honest and there's about 125 µg/mL of it in my blood which is quite a lot. I've had clonazepam and it is the strongest benzo after all so sedation is normal from that, but I only had it to come down from a manic/mixed episode. I've never had it while depressed probably because my depressive episodes are what pdocs would describe as 'melancholy depression' . My body itself is really slow while depressed so there was no need for benzos for me other than to help me sleep. If you feel sedated its a good idea to talk with your responsible clinician.
melissaw72
For me, depakote was extremely sedating, so much that I had to go off of it. And that was a time when I was on only a couple of meds, none of which were sedating. But it works well for others. Did you just start the depakote or have you been on it for a long time? If you just started it I'd give it a few weeks to see how you body handles it. Hopefully that side effect will go away.

I get like that often. I don't drink caffeine after noon and try to not take naps during the day.If I get up and do something stimulating at night, like go on-line, I stay awake. But, I don't know what to do. I don't like laying in bed. I haven't found an answer but I can commiserate. Hoping the melatonin works for you

melissaw72
FWIW ... About the melatonin, sometimes less is better. ie, taking 0.5 mg is sometimes better than taking 5 mg. But I'd ask your DR about it; it can have side effects like ambien (At least for me).
