Help me decide when I should take my meds

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have just changed some of my medications around and it has basically been left to me what medications I take when and how much. Currently I am on Pristiq 200mg, Seroquel 600mg, Clonazepam 6mg, Somac 40mg, Vitamin D 2000, Lyrica 300mg Phenobarbitone, Brufen (Ibuprofen 400mg), tetrabenazine and Norspan 7 day 40mcg/h

I was thinking:

Breakfast - Pristiq 100mg x 2, Clonazepam 2mg x 1, Vitamin D 1000IU x2 Somac 40mg x 1 Brufen 400mg x 1 Lyrica 150mg X1 Phenobarbitone 30mg x4 Tetrabenazine 25mg x 1

Lunch - Brufen 400mg x 1 Clonazepam 2mg x1 Tetrabenazine 25mg x 1

Dinner Brufen 400mg x 1 Tetrabenazine 25mg x 1

Bedtime - Seroquel 300mg x 2 Clonazepam 2mg x 1 Tetrabenazine 25mg x 1 Phenobarbitone 30mg x4

I was put on the Phenobarbitone and Tetrabenazine today and basically told play around until I find a dose that works for me.

How does that look? I could reduce the Phenobarbitone and Tetrabenazine but I am very medication resistant and thought I should just go for a dose that looks food for me.

My main issues are Depression, Anxiety, Akathesia and severe chronic tension type headaches.

Any suggestions?

This is something you really need to work with your pdoc on, at least IMO.  Don't the prescriptions you get have instructions on the bottles (or blister packs) they come in, as to when to take them?  Does your prescribing DR talk to you about them, and when they should be taken?  I don't think this is something you should figure out yourself.

You would need to ask your doc if  Phenobarbitone can be taken once at day and still remain effective during the day, i.e if it it has a long length of action. It's well with in your doc responsibility to work this out for you. It becomes a pain when you see multple docs.

My Neurologist Increased my Lyrica from 75mg to 150mg, he also introduced The Phenobarbitone, He wrote take 2-4 tablets a day, he also introduced the Tetrabenzine. With the Phenobarbitone he said just find a dose that works for you and with the Tetrabenazine he said take half a tablet twice a day but to play around with it until I find the best result. So I am now thinking I will take 4 x 30mg Phenobarbitone at night, and half a 25mg Tetrabenzine twice a day for a week then go up to a full tablet.

Just my opinion:

So he introduced the phenobarbitone AND the tetrabenzine at the same time?

Personally I would at least spread the phenobarbitone out at first as your body becomes used to it. Or start small, and work your way up to a dose that works well with you.  You may not even need all 4 pills to give you the effect that you're supposed to have.  And if you don't need all 4 pills, then there will be room to move up in dose in the future if needed.

Also I would start out with a smaller amount first of the phenobarbitone before diving into the full dose, especially if you've never been on it before.

If it were me, I would start one med at a time so if you have a bad side effect, you will know which med caused it.

But I am not  DR, so I think it would be a good idea to talk to the prescribing DR about all of this.

I have been on Phenobarbitone about a year ago at a dose of 4 tablets at night.

My major problem with medication is that I am very resistant to everything. As a purely scientific experiment when I was first prescribed the Phenobarbitone about a year ago i took 40 tablets with the hypothesis it would do nothing at all (I had never taken a barbiturate at that point). My hypothesis was correct, I did not feel any different from that 1 dose. Another example was at a time I was opiate naive I took 20 5mg IR Oxycodone, just out of curiosity to see if it would do anything (I suspected not and I was correct).

My Neurologist prescribed this medications, I don't have another appointment to see him for 3 months. I am seeing me GP (who I see every 2 weeks) on Monday and I am also seeing my psychiatrist (I see him every week) that day too. I also have a referral to a pain specialist that is in the works. I am glad that I live in Australia, I get all my medications for free and most doctors are free too!

I know the DR gave you 2 medications at the same time:

I understand you talked to your neurologist.  Is neuro prescribing these medications that you are posting about?  I realize s/her said to:

So IMO, I would play it safe and start slow, and one medication at a time.
