What causes my sudden jerk/twitches?

Recommended Posts

I keep twitching, and jerking, like I have parkinson's or something. I thought it might be one of my meds. I take Lamictal, clonazepam, Abilify, wellbutrin, gabapentin, and lisinopril (for hypertension). I also take inhalers for asthma. But one day I took (on accident) more than my prescribed dose of gabapentin and twitched so much, and had tremors (couldn't hold anything in my left hand or it would shake uncontrollably).

Any ideas on which one, or combo of, may be doing it? I tried Dr. Google with no success.

Only think I can think of is extra-pyramidal symptoms (EPS).

Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is one of the EPS, which they talk about also in the following link.  I have had TD and was put on cogentin for it.  Eventually mixed and matched meds and went off cogentin, and I had no residual effects.

There are 4 types of EPS.

Does this link help? ...

There were a lot more links that came up when I googled it (I googled, "EPS psychiatry"), but this link seemed to spell it out a little better.

Lamotrigine does list tics as a possible side effect, it's about 1 in 10,000 who get it. However if you're getting tremors it's probably less likely to be that.

I'd say it's either the lamotrigine, the aripiprazole or the gabapentin. If you've been on the aripiprazole for a long time and/or at a high dose then you have a higher chance of developing movement disorders. Since gabapentin was causing some irregular movements it's most likely to be that though.

It's not Parkinson's though because people with Parkinson's have trouble moving, not keeping still. I have a grand uncle with it and he really struggles with moving about, he's in a wheelchair most of the time.

Oh ... I'm sorry!  I misread your post when I read it.  Didn't realize you were asking which meds might be causing the problems you are having.

I'd say possibly the abilify, maybe lamictal.   Idk about gabapentin, but I do not remember ever having a problem with it.  YMMV though.

I think it is a combo of the lamictal and the gabapentin. I notice though when I take 900mg of gabapentin with my 250mg of lamictal, the jerking and twitching is more noticeable. Otherwise I just get an occasional jerk, like the type you get before you fall asleep. On rare occasions I get a tremor. I'll ask my pdoc what she thinks when I see her next. It doesn't really bother me, I just was curious what might be doing it.

My gf's dad was just diagnosed with Parkinson's. He's doing yoga and going to go to Parkinson's Boxing classes where they teach you the "movements you need to succeed".
