Tooth decay? with depakote er? Anyone?

Recommended Posts

I started taking Depakote ER in July. At the time it was 500mg twice at bedtime. At first it was fine and dandy. Now, the majority of my hair has fallen out, and today, just this morning, pieces from around the gumline of the back of my two front bottom teeth just started coming out. Like, my teeth were just crumbling! I was already going with my husband to his doctors appointment so while there I asked her if Depakote could cause that to happen and she said yes.

Today was the day that I was supposed to get a call about a possible med change because I've been so freaked out about the side effects I've been having from this medication. My pdoc is an APN with the counseling center I go to, and I see her via Telemed. She said no that is not a symptom I should expect from depakote, yet I've seen others that say they've had the same issues? I have a dentist appointment in the morning, but I am not optimistic about them being able to save them.

I guess my question is, has anyone on here had problems with depakote causing teeth decaying from the inside out? and crumbling?

I was riding a really really high bit of euphoria for most of the day. I was even able to laugh off the bits about my teeth until I got the phone call from my doc saying my med would not be changed until she saw me in two weeks.....I've already been off of it since saturday :(

*I did go ahead and take them..I do not know how the compliance thing works with counseling places.*

Be vigilant with depakote because it can cause all kinds of nutrient deficiencies. Don't let any quack bullshit about safety you because it is a dirty (but necessary and effective) drug but a lot of these quacks don't understand pharmacology the way a pharmacist would. I'm not going to pretend to be a doctor but if you are getting alopecia from it that means your body needs something or has too much of something. The shit is really bad for causing carnitine and folic acid deficiency. It is known to cause depression and was involved in every one of my near fatal suicide attempts. I was in 2 comas from it from overdosing on it. The last time i was on dialysis for 15 hours and didn't wake up for 3 weeks because the hyperammonemia from my liver failure kept me in the coma. My enzymes are still high 5 years later. I'm not going to second guess your doctor but they should not be so quick to sling that shit around unless they do a shit load of blood monitoring to check your hormones, liver, and pancreas and cross reference all your other medications to look for drug interactions that could be fucking with it's metabolism.
