How much do you sleep?

Recommended Posts

Between 9 and 12 hours unless I'm taking Elavil then it can easily be 15 hours with a hangover. Remeron wants me to sleep 11-12 hours, but Abilify wants me up with no more than 9 hours. I'd like to get back to 7 to 8 hours eventually, but I think for that I'd have to give up the Remeron.

Sleep has historically been kind of an issue for me. My sleep patterns have morphed a lot over the years, as well.

For the past six months or so, I've been in a distinct pattern: sleep 3-5 hours out of every 15, for about two weeks; then crash hard, and for two days, spend 12+  hours asleep. I can force it with caffeine pills (neither diphenhydramine nor doxylamine sedates me), but it never stays forced. As soon as I quit taking pills, I'm right back here.

I seem to get enough sleep, in that I'm not dragging all the time and my mood stays more or less stable, but it's a weird place to be in.

I have 2 types of sleeping. And the bulk of it changes from night to day regularly. The bulk is usually 11 hours. Then 2-3 naps of about 2.5 hours.

I despise it and take ridiculous amounts of caffeine pills to try and reduce it. Mostly, it does not work. Very rarely I will have insomnia, but that is usually not because of caffeine (yes, I have tested it) but my nightmares.

Even then I will make up for it on the opposite schedule.

So nice to hear your responses! I thought I was the only person that slept a ridiculous amount of time and still had to take an even more ridiculous amount of caffeine to stay awake and function. I'm literally constantly drinking coffee or Pepsi Max (has more caffeine than Mountain Dew). I even drink coffee at night. I occasionally take caffeine pills but they make me really jittery, my hands start shaking and everything.

I suspect our meds have a lot to do with our sleep issues.

That's so odd. I consume A LOT of caffeine and surprisingly it doesn't affect my sleep either. It's like I need crazy amounts of caffeine just to function.

I go to bed at 11-11:30pm and get 9 hours. It's actually a huge issue for me and I have no trouble sleeping but waking up is bad. I'm not sure how much I'd naturally sleep because my husband tries to get me up at the same time every day (8am). Any earlier than that and I can't walk or talk very well, I get terribly nauseous, and can only keep my eye lids open with great effort.

I get five hours of sleep, one-two hours awake, then 2-3 more hours of sleep. It's been like that for months.

Same thing with me ... but with a nap sometime in the day.  I wish though I could sleep the entire night though.

and i don't nap, i just cannot get to sleep during the day and i'm worried that if i start napping i'll have even more problems sleeping at night.

FWIW, Because I don't sleep a full night, I have to sleep during the day (with a few exceptions).  I have tried not sleeping through the day on purpose, but doing that actually makes it worse for me to sleep at night because my head feels so wound up.

Maybe you can try taking a nap during the day (or resting in a dark room with no sound)?  Maybe if you try that for 2 or 3 days you would have a good idea of whether taking a nap or resting would help you sleep better at night.  Just a thought.

I've totally been known to take a 30-minute cat nap during my lunch break at work. It's awful, I need something that will keep me up. Even my Adderall doesn't do it these days!

Ha! I took a nap today at work. I leaned back on my chair and fell asleep. Unfortunately my coworker woke me up when she knocked on my door.

There have been times when I don't sleep at night so instead I show up early and sleep for a few hours in the late morning.

The shit we do to get some damn rest. I am at the point where I can easily fall asleep anywhere, any weird position. It's crazy.

My naps usually are about an hour long, like almost to the minute.  That amount of time helps me get through the day.  Sometimes I've needed up to 3 of those naps/day.  Not much, but sometimes I just can't make it through the day with only one nap, like when I am in a severe depression or physically exhausted or something.

I feel like I didn't properly nap if I don't sleep at least 2 1/2 hours. Ideally, I'd prefer 3-4 hours.

Same here! I worked from home today (thank god for -5 degree weather - no one showed up) and I took a 3 hour nap after the phone meeting we had.

About 9-12hours seems like what our body 'wants'. When we give it less than that we usually do awfully. But often we'll stay up all night, either due to nerves/adrenaline/stress or to simply 'cycle it back round' to 9pm-10pm ish, but that usually only lasts a day or two before it does whatever it wants.

Without Trazadone, or something equally as sedating, I can not sleep at all. There was nights that I let my meds lapse, and didn't have anything to take; and I literally laid in my bed with my eyes closed THE ENTIRE NIGHT and never fell asleep. I guess I have to have my brain shut down with meds to be able to sleep or I'll just lay there all night with my mind going 100 miles an hours.

I get 6-7 hours depending on what drug combo I'm taking. When I luck out and sleep for 8 hours, I feel great. Less than that, and I'm sluggish if functional. My real problem now is that I just got an APAP machine, and the mask tends to keep me awake. Still working on that.
