Optimal Dose Slightly Higher Than Prescribed

Recommended Posts

So. I wasn't feelin' so great even after taking my prescribed dose of klonopin. Then I decided to try one more, I needed relief badly. And it worked. I know about tolerance, and don't think that was it. I was just in a particularly bad anxiety attack at the time. I already am on mg x2 daily, would the pdoc let me go up? Should I even ask? I'm scared she'll say no, and then scold me or take my meds away if she finds out I took an extra one, or think I am building a tolerance.

The problem with taking more of a med than what was prescribed is that you risk running out of it before it's legitimately time to get a refill. I can't say how your doctor will or won't react, but I do think that your best option is to be completely honest with her about what's going on.

I would ask pdoc ahead of time if you can increase the dose.  Is there a reason you can't/don't want to ask pdoc first?

That way you won't run out early by the end of the month, as said above.

Yeah, I don't feel like bothering her.. she's on maternity leave and I've already bothered her twice, once about the klonopin already (filling it at a new pharmacy). I feel like if I keep bugging her she'd not want to help me. She's a nice lady but I feel like she'd say no, or feel that since I took more than prescribed that I have a potential abuse problem or something. I don't take them every single day so I usually do not run out before the next prescription date rolls around...

You understand the risks of taking too much klonopin, I take it? I went through withdrawal earlier this year, but I'm back to taking it now because there are times when I just need it. But I've found that if I can keep it down to 0.5 mg / day, I don't develop a dependence. My hope is that as my other meds start working, I'll have days when I don't need to take it at all.

Right. I want to be very careful with it, which is why I am concerned about the pdoc's possible reaction to me taking an extra one. That amount seemed to work wonders. Should I bring it up or just take the extra one? I only take them on occasions when my meditations don't help. So not everyday - I'd have enough to last me.

If you don't take them every day then I say go for it.

Yeah, usually my gabapentin if I take the recommended dose of 3 a day works well to quell the mild anxiety I get - but on those occasions (actually becoming more frequent unfortunately) where I just can't stop the anxiety and it's so awful that I want to crawl up into a ball in the corner - that's what I take my klonz. So yeah I tend to agree with you.

Is there someone on call for your DR during her maternity leave?  Or is she covering herself?  I don't think you are bothering her if she is covering herself.  And if someone else is on-call, I'd ask that DR about it.  If you ask, worse they can say is "no," right?

If it were me, I'd call and ask about trying a higher dose, explaining why.

She is covering herself online and over the phone with her techs and stuff. I can always ask. But first I think I need something other than lamictal. It is just not working for me anymore.
