Fiona
Well, I did it last Monday.....I joined Weight Watchers online! Too soon to say anything about my weight, but so far I like the 'point' system and feel like it's improved my diet. And it's not restrictive -- so far I haven't had to deprive myself of anything I really wanted to eat. It's just a question of balancing things out. I have noticed that the 'points' calculations point toward low-fat high-fiber foods, which can only be good. And I downloaded the stuff to my Palm so I can enter the foods and their 'point' values while I'm sitting there looking at it (and deciding about it). I found this very useful and enlightening in the grocery store. This Monday I'm going to start using that gym membership of mine and actually exercise. Bizarrely, I like the treadmill and the elliptical -- of course, I'm one of those people who can read on the treadmill. I have a four-week training program I got from a magazine that my pdoc has approved in the past. And I love Pilates. It's an inertia problem, it's so much easier not to go. Not to get dressed and put on the shoes and walk those four whole blocks. Especially since it'll be raining tomorrow. Ugh. I'll provide progress reports, if only for myself. Lily
Good for you!! Inertia and gravity have joined forces to chain me to my couch/bed/chair. I'm glad you've conquered them! Looking forward to hearing how you're doing!

Fiona <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yeah, Fiona...more inspiration. All I have to do is download the app for the Y and walk across the street...how easy is that? Good luck, let us know how you like the online WW. I did he IRL WW long time ago, gained weight.

tallulah
Yay, Fiona! A friend of mine was hesitant when she first started WW, but was diligent and lost over 60lbs with only light exercise. Keep us posted!
Loon-A-TiK
I joined WW last night. I was at the gym working out and saw a woman about my age with the most amazing body. I asked her how she did it, and I was shocked to hear Weight Watchers. I immediately left the gym to go to WW (they were about to have a meeting I wanted to attend). I liked it so joined. I've only done if for a day, but the point system has shown me that I way overeat. We're in it together! Work it baby! I gained 12 lbs on Zyprexa that I am attempting to lose. And a few lbs I had before the Zyprexa. I weigh 150 and want to weigh 125-130. I'm not huge, but need to get this under control. You go girl! loon
Fiona
Joy! Joy! I've lost 4 or 5 pounds in the very first week!!!! The program is designed for you to lose 2 pounds/week, but in the first few weeks you might lose more. And I haven't even hit the gym yet. I was going to do that this week, but last minute revisions to my dissertation got in the way. I am so excited about this! Fiona
Batou
Fiona, late to the thread but I am truly happy for you. Maybe the final draft of the dissertation will allow you to drop a few more pounds. Loon-A-TiK
Dissertation! Yeah! Once THAT is off your shoulders you should really impress the weigh-in lady at WW! Are you doing the Flex points or the Core?
Min
WW really worked for my mom. good luck to you! and be proud! i'm not yet ready to go on a diet o_o the idea scares me XD
Fiona
Dissertation! Yeah! Once THAT is off your shoulders you should really impress the weigh-in lady at WW! Are you doing the Flex points or the Core? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'm pretty sure once I hand my dissertation over to the grad school I'm going to be floating for quite a while! I'm using the flex points system, it appeals to the part of me that likes things neatly labeled and described. And I can eat whatever I want, within the points. I had the impression that the core plan was a little more direct in terms of what to eat. I'm actually not going to any meetings -- me, a scale, and a room full of people talking about weight and food would equal a big-time major freak-out. So I'm going through the online system, it holds my data online and updates itself into my Palm when I synch my palm for everything else. I love having it on my Palm -- having it so easily accessible in the grocery store is great! And I'm learning where my favorite foods and treats fit in. I'm also learning to ask myself if something I'm thinking of will fill me up enough or please me enough to justify the points involved. So what do you think so far? Fiona
My Monday paean to Weight Watchers: I have lost another six pounds! So now I've lost 11 (yes eleven!) pounds in two weeks! And I haven't done any unusual/additional exercise, yet. It's supposed to level off to about two pounds a week, but I'm not going to complain about this. A couple of my friends say that my face and upper body do appear bit thinner (my partner says there's less of me to hug). Tomorrow is house-cleaning day, and Wednesday is the start of actual exercise. Hmmm, Weight Watchers is proving to be quite an anti-depressant all by itself. kelanor
Congratulations Fiona! I'm glad you're feeling better. My mom has lost 50lbs in the past year or so on weight watchers. She loves it, and they've been so supportive, even now that she's met her goal.

firedancer
I did WW online Flex Points after I got off Paxil and wanted to lose those 30lbs that I lost. Now I want to join again! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Like I said, the flex points system just appeals so much to the part of me that likes to categorize and organize and count things (perhaps not coincidently one of the things I sometimes do professionally). Do you have a Palm? You can download the database of food/exercise points, the calculator, and the daily points tracker into it. This is, I think, one of the reasons I'm doing so well -- it's right there, I can check things and enter them immediately. It's also been great at the grocery store, I can calculate points for meals and foods quickly and easily right there in the aisle. Ok, now I sound like a salesperson -- I'm just happy with it. I'm graduating in May and for the first time I'm thinking I might like the pictures that will inevitably be taken. Fiona
Fiona
It's not Monday, but my weekly paeon is still here. Not such a dramatic loss, only 2 or 3 pounds this week -- every pound counts. I'm just so happy, and unlike my other efforts at diets I'm not getting obsessed about food and trying to eat as little as possible while remaining vertical. Yay! GroovyGwen
So I joined yesterday too. I got sick of myself and joined with a friend who is equally sick of herself. I have to go to meetings though, I find theme inspiring. And I think they are good for mental health too. All about empowerment and healthy thinking and the benefits of a healthy life... Yesterday the leader told us a quote from Alice in Wonderland - here is a rundown - "Which direction shall I go?" asked Alice to the cheshire cat. "Where are you going?" responded the cat. "I don't much care where I end up." Replied Alice. "Then it doesn't matter which way you go!" said the cat. Something like that - I am bad with retelling stories, but you get the gist. I liked this because it addresses my apathy in almost all thing in my life. I don't know/don't care where or who I want to be in my life, so that is why I don't direction. If I figure out where I want to be I can work backwards and figure out where I should go next. Anyway, I'll let you know how I do!
imfinethanksfornotasking
Actually 17 pounds in 6 weeks is a healthy steady weight loss. The going idea is that the first week a person might lose a higher amount, say 5 pounds, then 2 - 2.5 pounds a week thereafter. So you're doing it right. I was thinking of joining WW too but I have the basics down and I'm not all into the group thing - and I seem to be getting help from my meds so I am lucky. But congrats on the weight loss, that is awesome!

I've taken the extra link out of my watchband, and I've stopped wearing sweaters over just about everything. I don't do meetings either, that's why I do only the online version -- track it online and in my Palm, and never have to talk to anyone. They have forums for various kinds of support and such, but I don't use them. And as I start to be able to wear things I haven't in quite some time, it's like getting a free new wardrobe! olga
Fiona: Thank you for posting about this. I've got a weight issue that I really need to address, and your story is helping push me to the point of doing something. I eat healthy stuff--just too much of it! Good on you to be doing this in a healthy way and learning good habits. If it's truly successful, it ceases being a diet and becomes a way of life. I'm jealous--in a good way! **olga signs off CB to go check otu WW on the Net**
