IcePrincess88
I seen my pdoc today. I asked for an antidepressant to help with my weight. She gave me Cymbalta. It can help my depression, anxiety, pain, and weight. So I want to know how was/is Cymbalta for you? I just started it today, but I usually take 2 or 3 naps a day. With this med, I've failed to fall asleep everytime. My mind won't shut off to sleep.
jt07
Interesting. I never heard that Cymbalta could be used for weight loss. I heard that it is good against pain and as an antidepressant. The insomnia *should* go away in a week or two unless it has triggered a manic episode. I've made no secret about the fact that I had a very bad experience with Cymbalta, but I'm not inclined to repeat it here because it was how Cymbalta affected me, and I know it helps a lot of people. Good luck with it!
mikl_pls
I lost 10 lb the first week I took Cymbalta, but slowly gained it back and then some, but I blame that on bad dieting. Then I switched from Geodon to Abilify and lost a ton of weight that Geodon had put on me (a little over 20 lb in 2 months), especially when I started the ketogenic diet. IcePrincess88
Well so much for it ruining my naps. I actually slept more today than I normally do. 15 hours.
Remnants
Thanks for sharing your experience, I'd really like to know how you go. I just started this too but take mirtazapine too which is sedating. My doctor said that this med is suppose to be 'weight neutral' meaning that you don't go up or down which may be what your doctor was going for, like at least its not going to cause weight gain. Gearhead
I went off Lexapro (escitalopram) in favor of Cymbalta because my pnurse thought it would be easier on my weight, and I think maybe it was, but it is hard to say because I stopped taking Seroquel XR at the same time, and that one was a terrible weight-gainer for me. Last summer when I was at the beginning of a bad manic episode my pnurse took me off of Cymbalta immediately, with the idea that it might me making the mania worse and stopping it might help. It didn't, but that's just me; it was a hell of an episode.

With this med, I've failed to fall asleep everytime. My mind won't shut off to sleep. Good luck! I was on Cymbalta for close to 2 years. It was completely weight neutral for me. It was more activating than most SSRI's, but one thing I hated was the withdrawal if i accidently missed a dose, or if I took the dose later than usual - major nausea & brain zaps. There is also a well known sort of IBS-like effect with Cymbalta (it wasn't totally intolerable for me, but a noticeable & ongoing stomach upset). I know the half-life is longer than Effexor (a much worse offender in the abrupt withdrawal regard) but overall I guess it was OK, obviously didn't help me that much because I would've stayed on it. I think it actually made me a bit agitated/sweaty/nervous after awhile, so watch out for that. Wanted to add it's also approved for Fibromyalgia & pain related issues if that is of interest/use to you. jt07
You won't necessarily get withdrawal symptoms. I was pulled off Cymbalta cold turkey in the hospital and didn't suffer withdrawal. Some people do get withdrawal symptoms though. YMMV.
