jonnyc55
So the doctor has put me on a 400mg (monthly) Abilify (aripripazole) injection. It takes roughly two weeks to begin (?), in that time It begins am on 10 days of 7.5mg of oral aripripazole. Every day is absolute hell, I can't sit down for long, I can't do TV and PC. So I have two more days to go on oral 7.5mg, in the morning its better before the oral dose, and gets worse after I take it. Since the half life of abilify is 75 hours, will I feel benefit of quitting the abilify oral after the 10 days and the 3 extra days it is eliminated with half life? Or will the injection still cause akathisia when it kicks in? Another question I ask is whether the injection lasts a month including the two week time it takes to kick in or is it a month after that? My final question is, I don't want to be on abilify because I am well now but not in the eyes of my pdoc or parents, so can I object it and also most importantly is there a counter to the injection so I don't have to endure a whole month of restless akathisia? Thank you.
Teh Gaben
As a rule of thumb, any side effects you get from the oral tablets should be the same with the injection. At least that's what I was told by my pdoc. You can object to being given the depot, but if you're not taking the tablets properly, your pdoc will likely ignore your objections. Are you under a community care order? Lastly, once you've had the injection the side effects will stay with you unless there is another pill that can take those side effects away. Maybe a benzo for the akithisia? I'm no doctor though, best off asking your pdoc what s/he recommends.

jt07
Yes, talk to your doctor before you get the injection. Because Abilify has a long half life you will likely have akathisia longer than 1 month after the injection. However, it concerns me that you think you are well even though your doctor and parents disagree. We are usually the worst measure of our own mental health as others are more objective. This is particularly true if you are lacking insight. So I'd say that you need to work with your psychiatrist to get on a different antipsychotic that doesn't cause you the akathisia and be treatment compliant. Swamp56
There are several different medications that can provide relief for akathisia and other EPS symptoms. These include Cogentin (Benzatropine), Artane (Trihexyphenidyl), and Propranolol.
