wookie
Not being from the US I am guessing that this is good news for those who need the insurance coverage for meds who otherwise would not have it without Obamacare.
jt07
This just goes to show that the Republicans were just anti-Obama and didn't really have a plan of their own. The so-called Trump bill was cobbled together at the last minute and was so bad that even Republicans themselves couldn't support it. The anti-Obamacare rhetoric was just blind hatred against Obama. confused
I worry people are too proud about the defeat of this plan. Some Republicans didn't feel it went far enough>

Some Republicans didn't feel it went far enough> The ultra-conservatives wanted to completely gut Obamacare while the more moderate Republicans wanted to retain some features such as coverage of maternity expenses, coverage of pre-existing conditions, etc. And even some moderates didn't want deep Medicaid cuts. They are at loggerheads and will have to compromise if they want to replace Obamacare, but the ultra conservatives are known not to want to compromise on anything. jt07
Well, I'm not gloating because I know there will be a round 2. We can only hope that the bill in round 2 will be more favorable and will force the conservatives to compromise.

CrazyRedhead
The Repubs have had 7 years (Obamacare was passed in 2010) to come up with a better healthcare plan, and they haven't been able to do it in all those years, even though they have a majority in the House and Senate. Now they even have a Repub in the White House, and they still can't agree.... The hard-core conservatives don't really care about the welfare of the people--they just want Obamacare thrown away out of spite, and are very unlikely to consider anything less than totally doing away with it. The moderate Repubs don't really want to piss off any of their voters, and they want to keep some parts of Obamacare. So, what did Trump and Ryan do?......They came up with something at the last minute that neither group could agree on--it didn't go far enough for the hard-line Repubs, and the more moderate conservatives thought it went too far. My guess is that Republicans will never agree on another plan that will pass both houses of Congress....They have little room for error in the Senate, where they only hold majority by 3 seats. Yes, there probably will be another attempt, but now the more moderate Repubs are scared that if they pass another plan and it fails miserably, the voters will vote them out. They're scared of possibly throwing millions of people off their insurance, and rightly so. Edited March 29, 2017 by CrazyRedhead

nestor
So if I understand this right, the Republicans wanted to not only gut obamacare, but Medicaid as well?

There's actually three camps of Republicans right now. There's the far far right who think government should be as small as possible (except, of course, where it applies to women's reproductive rights, gay rights. etc). They didn't think Trump's bill went far enough. There's the far right who supported the bill. Then there's the right of center who think Medicaid should stay as it was expanded under the Affordable Care Act. The thing that really chafes my hide is the Affordable Care Act is such a watered down version of the original Obama Care proposal that it's already pandering to health insurance companies. I'm an anarchosyndicalist-cum-socialist at heart though.

I heard at one point that Trump was in favor of universal healthcare, but I guess he has to tow the Republican line to some degree at least in regards to healthcare.
