Frk
Just a question. Are there any noticable differences ?

KnickNak
This is what the scroll down thingy from Google said. Lorazepam (Ativan) is approved for management of anxiety disorders, short-term (≤ 4 months) relief of anxiety symptoms, anxiety associated with depressive symptoms, or anxiety/stress-associated insomnia. Important distinction here is Xanax has approval for use in panic disorder, Ativan does not. Also what I found interesting, they said Xanax lasts longer in Asians (25% longer half life compared to Caucasians), obese patients, and the elderly. Iceberg
It really depends on the person and how much coverage is needed
Iceberg
@Dphxa maybe not for you but it has some uses for some
Iceberg
That you said you'd never take Xanax
Iceberg
Did you become dependent? Because I agree that is a risk with Xanax but i think it's better for panic...and for me it worked for sleep
Iceberg
No I agree with you that Xanax should be PRN. If someone needs something for panic daily I think klonipin is a better bet, all day coverage and less abuse than short acting drugs
DopamineSick
I've taken xanax, ativan, and klonopin. Based on my experience, I wouldn't recommend ativan. It wasn't as effective as either xanax or klonopin, and I had a hard time coming off of it.
Iceberg
My pdoc agrees with you about the effectiveness....and yet it's the typical formulary at some hospitals...hmmm
Iceberg
But I've heard of Ativan Rxd 6 times a day But I typically don't get bad withdrawal so I can't speak to that personally
melissaw72
I was on Ativan for only 2 days, and the reason for having to go off of it then was because after the very first dose, I found myself reaching for the Ativan bottle without much thought to take another one. Even after one dose. When I took the 2nd dose, I knew it was something that I could become addicted to. And I told pdoc that I wasn't going to risk getting addicted to it, because it had that effect on me. YMMV of course, but this is my experience on it. Otherwise I don't know much about it.
Iceberg
Yes there are very serious concerns with benzos, but it's also important for doctors to not be "benzo-phobic" when they necessary

Iceberg
I find that the really good doc's are the ones who only care about whether the plan is working, not about whether there are *Gasp* controlled substances (when circumstances allow of course ex not with someone battling addiction)
notloki
Ativan has more hypnotic and anticonvulsive effects compared to Xanax while Xanax has more antianxiety effects than Ativan. Ativan is still an effective anti anxiety med, dosing is at least 4 times a day if you want complete coverage or it can be taken PRN. Xanax dosing is much the same. Iceberg
It's funny tho cuz there each recommended three times a day
BrianOCD
Taken both, they honestly felt like two totally different types of drugs even though they're both classified as benzo... Didn't like Xanax, take Ativan.
Alien Navel Cord
I've taken xanax, ativan, and klon, and the one that really had me feel nearly instant releif (within 15 minutes) was the xanax. A very content calm feeling. Ativan did almost nothing for me, and the klonz were mostly daily maintenance for GAD which also did nothing for me after about 5 years of being on them.
