My new psychiatrist said I was on so many medications and that I should only be on one.

What can I say to her?

I'm on Vyvanse, Wellbutrin, Zoloft, Ativan and Trazodone

I'm not addicted to medication; I just don't want to be in more pain; even with my current cocktail of medicines, I'm not getting any noticeable relief. I've been on monotherapy for two years, and it didn't do anything.

I feel like she is scared, doesn't want to try new meds and new approaches to be "safe" and keep her reputation.

Is there any way you can find someone else? Quickly? She sounds like someone I'd run from... That is one of the most ignorant things I've ever heard a pdoc say. Not everyone can be treated with just one medicine, some people's conditions require a cocktail of medicines, and polypharmacy is extremely common in psychiatry, she ought to know that. Your cocktail is very innocuous and harmless, why does she want to yank you off of your meds and have you on just one, even when you said yourself you're not getting any noticeable relief on your current regimen? I don't foresee you making any progress with this psychiatrist. Sorry to say that.

I'm sorry I don't have any words of advice on what to say to her. She probably can't be reasoned with anyway. That's probably her method of practice, and nothing anyone says will break that, I'm willing to bet. Maybe someone else will chime in with something you could probably say to her to try and reason with her, but if I were you (and I'm not, so take this with a grain of salt), if I even tried to reason with her and she doesn't budge, I'd run as far away from her as I could... lol.

@cryinginmoscow, I agree with mikl_pls above........You need to find another psychiatrist.....This one isn't going to be of any help to you, in my opinion.

I don't know how difficult it would be for you to find another doctor in your area, but if I were you, I'd start looking right away.

I have already sadly paid for one session which cost me £520 ($649) and I'm seeing her one more time next Tuesday I will discuss this with her again and explain to her what I think about that idea and then listen to her response and then I'll make a decision if I want to see her again or not.

They don't have this try before you buy and you never know what you're going to get. My last psychiatrist was good, but the problem with him is because he is a private doctor he distanced himself from me until discharging me because I was a huge risk on his career because of suicide attempts. I don't want to be selfish, so I believe it's half appropriate, but also it's a bit like medical neglect.

If you're paying privately for your pdoc there should be plenty of others to try, and most will be a lot cheaper than £520, that's for sure! I think you should be shopping around for someone different already. Why do you not have a pdoc on the NHS? They're free.

@cryinginmoscow, Is there any chance at all for you to get another doctor, or are you pretty much stuck with this doc, who thinks you should be on one medication?

She has already started writing her report, and one is in support of my surgery so I can't back out now but possibly after that session I will call the company and ask for a different psychiatrist.

It's a postcode lottery with the NHS I live in a shitty council where psychiatrists and therapists have done more harm than good to my mental health and condition.

Ahh, ok. My NHS pdoc isn't too bad, but I've had two who were an absolute nightmare. It really is luck of the draw over here, isn't it.

I think it's a good idea for you, to ask for another doc.....There is some hope that you will get the help you need .

Whenever I "leave" a psychiatrist and explain why I made that choice, they see me as even MORE of a risk and liability, the company then simply refuses.

That's a terrible situation to be in........I'm so sorry.

I can't think of any more advice myself, but hopefully someone else might have some other suggestions.

I'm in the USA, so I'm not too familiar with how the system works in the UK.

I just have an observation. Why do you want to be on all those meds if they aren't helping you?

I've been on nearly every antidepressant and none help. I have terrible depression. Also, some of the meds such as Lisdexamfetamine and Lorazepam do help. I need to be on some combination because I have several disorders and don't think there is a single drug that would help all of those. I'm not against her changing my medications but I am against her suggesting for me to be on one drug.

You don't have to tell them why.  I have left plenty of pdocs after one or 2 appts ... I just don't go back.

Although it might be different in the UK than US.

They both discharged me because I was a risk. looking for new one right now

I'm sorry and a little disgusted at that level of care. You need help the most when you are a risk. People are a risk for a reason and deserve care just like everyone else. I'm flabbergasted.

I'd love to give you feedback on your letter of complaint except that I don't know anything about the healthcare system in the U.K. to make any intelligent suggestions. For example, I don't know what policies and documents you are referring to.
