the kids next to me are looking up chicks online and commenting on their breasts and other features. I'm about to turn over to them and say something snide, as I am NOT amused! and am disturbed!

I guess I should pay my cable bill at home so I don't have to come to the library to experience all these fun peoploe I write about every day!

Problem with getting your library to slap on a filter is most filters automatically filter any useful sites out too.

Wanna look up breast cancer on a filtered computer?

Need information on practically ANY prescription drug?

Most filters automatically block either site. Anything with the word breast or drug in it....just about anything useful, really.

Unless your librarian knows EXACTLY what they're doing and they're willing to sit there and set filter exclusions for half a day, the only websites you can visit from one are sites with absolutely nothing useful in them.

A better idea might just be telling the little punks off. ;)

our sites are filtered by a central filter set by the IT management (council run library)

also, under 16's parents have to sign a permission form to say they can use the internet and take responsibility.

Oops. Sorry. Sometimes I forget not everyone lives in small towns.  ;)

Our library doesn't have an IT, unless you mean the Steven King book. (They probably don't even have that.)

I'm more along the lines of the under 16 getting permission and being the parent's responsibility, though.

  • 3 weeks later...

Our Library has a "Policy on Internet Use" that forbids looking at porn, so we just tell them to stop.  If they don't, Security escorts them out and they could lose their internet priviledges.  The policy must be agreed to by each user as they log on.

Some guy in the library here was looking at porn.  Fat chick porn, not that there's anything wrong with that.  I was half tempted to stand up and say loudly, "Are you looking at porn?!?"

This is a university library, I doubt they filter much.
