Feeling embarrased about possible OCD diagnosis

Recommended Posts

This is in no way meant to make anyone feel bad about having OCD, these are my own personal feelings

For a few months now I've been told I have first episode psychosis by my psychiatrist and others, but I just met with a psychologist very recently and he told me that hes thinking I have OCD. Every time I bring up the fact that I think people are watching me and I think everyone is against me, he tells me its "amazing im able to tell that its not real that people are watching me" and that "theres a fine line between a delusion and an obsession" and he keeps saying that "I'm just having obsessions". So this time I told him that I think I've started seeing dots of light that I believe aren't really there, and he still believes I have OCD.

Mind you, I did have some OCD symptoms in the past, such as checking and re checking locks, counting to special numbers (2,3 and 6) and repeating actions 2, 3 or 6 times and having a very methodical way of thinking.

The thing about all of this is that, because of the heavy intense stigma around OCD, I've started feeling really embarrassed about the possibility of having OCD versus psychosis. When I thought I had psychosis, I felt like I was taken seriously and that I was given the best care possible. Now that the psychologist thinks I have OCD I feel like im not being taken seriously. Its not that I want psychosis over OCD, its just that I don't feel like I'm a serious case anymore.

I don't know what to do now. I believe I have psychosis but the doctors say otherwise. Did anyone else feel a little embarrassed because of stigma when they were diagnosed with OCD? Is it possible that I have psychosis AND OCD? Thanks in advance for the replies

Personally, I have extremely bad OCD, and I've never experienced seeing things that aren't there due to the OCD..............And yes, it is possible to have both a psychotic disorder and OCD:

As to your question about the stigma of OCD---I believe there's just as much stigma attached to any kind of mental disorder......Very sad, but true,

If you believe you've been misdiagnosed, my best advice would be to seek out a second opinion from another psychiatrist.

You can certainly have both (I do). It sounds like your doctor just isn't sure where to draw the line yet. I've been misdiagnosed OCD when I was psychotic once. People don't realize it, but there can be a lot of overlap.

I agree, you definitely can have both (I do as well as others have posted here).

I agree with this.  Stigma is attached to MI in general.  Maybe not everyone experiences it, but it is definitely out there.

I think a second opinion is a good idea too.

My pdoc knows I have auditory hallucinations- little voices telling me to place objects in places so my family won't get hurt. I'm not sure if I have visual hallucinations or if it's my imagination, but I've seen stuff, too. It's definitely possible to have both. My psychosis and OCD seem to go hand in hand! Rest assured, it's nothing to feel embarrassed about.

I've been embarrassed by every MI I've been diagnosed with. Some I've agreed with, some I have not. I know what you mean by thinking your care might change. I have had that feeling at times. A second opinion might help if you doubt the diagnosis.
