A/D's causing anhedonia?

Recommended Posts

A poll: I'm wondering if MOST SSRI/SNRI-type antidepressants typically cause anhedonia/low motivation/apathy for you? It's a catch-22: For me, A/Ds can prevent severe dips in mood, but they always seem to have this anhedonia as a side effect at the therapeutic dose.

I know there are some A/Ds here that are not known to cause this (Wellbutrin, Cymbalta) yet in my case, they did (except Wellbutin which had no effect)

Here's hoping that Ritalin will take away this side effect!! I plan to go off the Trintillex, because it isn't doing anything to brighten my mood & remove this apathy. All I want to do is lay around in bed!

I've had the same experience on some of the ADs and not others. Lexapro, Effexor and Celexa all made me kind of numb and apathetic. Zoloft, Prozac, Cymbalta, Wellbutrin and Remeron don't seem to do it so much.

It could also be that you've only had a partial response to the AD, and so are experiencing a modified version of your depression, rather than remission.

My mom has anhedonia in general, so I'm not sure if it's a side effect of the meds. I do know that Prozac and Risperdal both caused flat affect in her, though, which looks like anhedonia sometimes.

My current SSRI causes a lot of apathy and motivational problems, but I wouldn't say it caused anhedonia. Anhedonia is caused by my depression. I also don't recall any other SSRI or SNRI causing apathy to the degree this one does. But they alll kind of blunted my emotions.
