Remeron questions

Recommended Posts

I am taking remeron and not sure if it is even working I am no less depressed and my appetite well I don't know if it has increased I think that's part of why my psychiatrist put me on it eating disorder stuff but I am not eating more and my sleep well I fell asleep quicker with the trazedone...so I don't know I see her next week and I will discuss it but has anyone taken this medication and it caused weight gain or appetite increase or more sleep ...

I took it for a very brief time at 30 mg. It helped me sleep the first few nights, but soon quit helping in that respect. It did stimulate my appetite but in a strange way, like it would make me wake up in the middle of the night and crave things like ice cream and sweets and whatnot. That's what prompted me to quit taking it, but its affect on my appetite and weight persisted for about a month after I stopped taking it.

If I recall correctly, you are trying to take something to help you sleep and increase appetite, is that correct? If so, perhaps the antihistamine cyproheptadine might help you better.

I take 37,5 mg, but have taken 60 mg in the past.

YES it increases appetite and hunger, which often leads to weight gain. Also it tends to make you sleepy. It does for me anyway.

I gained 10 kg within the first two month, but I lost it again half a year later. So I would say the appetite returns to normal again at some point. A lot of people would disagree though ;-)

I see this post is a bit old. I hope you found some relief.

Maybe you could ask about a combination of Prozac (commonly used for anorexia nervosa) + cyproheptadine (an appetite stimulant, also commonly used in anorexia nervosa). I think you've told me you've taken Prozac before, but maybe they didn't get the dosage to a dosage that works out for you.

Or really, any SSRI will do, but Prozac from what I've read is the most commonly used.

Other meds that can be used are Zoloft or Anafranil (to address the AN itself). Zyprexa can probably be used as an adjunct to help with appetite stimulation and mood improvement. If I remember correctly, you've taken Zoloft before, so Anafranil might be a good thing for you to try. It will help the obsessive aspects of AN.

Last time I took a medication that made me gain weight I got worse and restricted even more because I gained too much even my nutritionist thought I gained too much that's why it scares me.

I'm sorry, that comment was inappropriate. I don't have a full understanding of the disorder and have limited advice to offer. I really wish I could help you because it seems like you're really distressed.

Thanks that's ok it is difficult for meds to help hunger or weight gain some fear they feel like binging my nutritionist told me I don't binge but fear it will cause something like that too. It's a difficult disorder

And people without the disorder fail to understand or find it hard to understand because they don't have it and don't know what it's like. They can't put themselves in your shoes because it's almost like the shoes are on a different plane of existence lol. But I consider myself an empathetic person, yet I find myself unable to empathize with you because I don't know what it's like to have your disorder, and I wish I could empathize with you... I wish I could understand your pain and frustration so I could better help you.

I am no expert at all on any of these things, but in my humble opinion, I think that you have some obsessive symptoms, and that's what the antidepressants are for. I am no expert in eating disorders, but from what I have read, the less you obsess, the less you fear about gaining, and the better outcome you will have with the disorder. It's just a matter of finding the right antidepressant. Sometimes they have to bring the big ones out like Nardil (an MAOI) which has been used in many eating disorders.

I took remeron 45mg and seroquel xr 900mg together 2 years. That combo knocked me out all that time. Weight gain was the reason to stop remeron after all. Also, i had terrible situation because my anxiety fluctuated and eventually began to hallucinate which was not common to me back then..

hope youll be feeling better soon. The peace of mind means everything to me nowadays.. everything else comes after that.
