Tdoc: quit reading so much news! Alternatives, please???

For at least those of us in the US, the news has been appalling lately. I can't help but obsessively follow what's going on. I'm already staggering towards another depressive episode, I know this isn't helping, but yet feel helpless. Tdoc says to filter the news, only read what's absolutely necessary. But what does that leave me?

Any suggestions on websites that are more uplifting? My imagination seems to have bottomed out, if not news sites, I really don't know what to read. I like to wake very early, so I have quiet solitude and can read uninterrupted by kids/pets. Please, any suggestions? I'm artsy, if that helps.

Not quite an answer, but I've also struggled with the frustration, anger, and anxiety caused by the news in the US. I also value being informed so as to be able to protect myself and fight against legislation that would be harmful to me and members of my community. Besides, it's so pervasive in today's society, so avoiding the news isn't really possible for me. What my therapist suggested a while ago - sometime after the election and inauguration, was to set boundaries on my news consumption and to take short news holidays. At various points what I've done in limit myself to only listening to NPR while driving home from work, or only watch one segment of news - for me, this meant alternating between Rachel Maddow and Laurence O'Donnell, or saying that I wouldn't check the news at all on Sundays. Basically setting boundaries and saying, "this is how much news I'll consume today" so as to avoid becoming overwhelmed by it. I would occasionally break these rules if there was something I really wanted to follow up on, but it still helped.

TI had to quit using Facebook bc it was becoming a slight obsession after the election. Same with Twitter.  I am just drawn to the political posts and it was hurting my mental health.

For awhile I played games like Words with Friends and that helped distract me. I sometimes like to look at women's magazines or "lifesyle" magazines bc I can't focus on reading books right now.

Recently i have been obsessing over news and it has caused quite a bit of strife. There is so much conflict in the world. I dont know what to suggest I wish there was a machine to suck away anxiety. When i was a child i had fantasies about a syringe that would extract negative emotions instead of blood. I wish i had one of those.

Sometimes I just read the headlines, to keep a basic grasp on current events. Reading the BBC’s website works, too. The degree of remove is helpful.

My tdoc once told me to quit watching the news for a while, so I did. For about two years, actually. The world was still here when I got back.

The only news source I read is the Daily Stormer, but you need a pretty dark sense of humour to appreciate it.

I should say so indeed, since it isn't remotely funny, nor intended to be.

Actually, Rabbit, we have just the thing for news-o-philes. The second stickied post on our Depression Board is called Required Reading, and offers a set of news site links from around the world that provide news items on good news only.

Check it out.

I generally watch the local news as it is much milder than the national news and sprinkled with good news stories. I might watch the national news once per day for a half hour and maybe check in on the national news on the internet once or twice if something big is going on. But there is a limit to how much I can handle and I probably watch too much as it is.

Thank you so much Cerberus. After what I just read about the latest trump/n korea, I'm vowing to not even watch the news for at least 24 hours. I'm sure the mushroom cloud will look pretty in the dawn hours. Yes, I'll check it out.

my local news is the state capital news station, jt, and trust me, it can be brutal too.

Sigh.

Oh, and thanks to most of you (you know who you are)  <everyone except Nestor> that are supportive. I appreciate the responses!

You may not find it funny, but it's always intended to be, Anglin has stated so several times before, the Stormer's humour and use of memes is what sets it apart from other WN websites like Stormfront.

If you subscribe to WN idealogy then you'd best keep it to yourself. We have NO patience for that kind of crap here and expressing it will get you banned before you even knew what happened.

We are a peer support site that supports EVERYBODY regardless of race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation.

Check your Wikipedia:

On August 17, after a relocation to dailystormer.ru, the Russian media watchdog Roskomnadzor requested a shutdown of the domain.[72] The Daily Stormer briefly returned to the clearnet with a .lol gTLD, dailystormer.lol, administered by Namecheap,[73][74] but after two days, Namecheap canceled the domain.[75] The company's CEO Richard Kirkendall stated that "the quality and context of the material, paired with the support for violent groups and causes passes from protected free speech into incitement", specifically quoting one published statement from The Daily Stormer: "It doesn't take a Ph.D. in mathematics to understand that White men + pride + organization = Jews being stuffed into ovens.

The DS is serious. You’re on thin ice, Nestor. Really, really thin. I’m Jewish. I have a pretty thick skin, but if you make one more mention of any site that would go near an idea like this with a ten foot poll, the results will be bad for you.

Members, feel free to make your feelings known.

Well atleast you're more tolerant than my old favourite website, which permabans people who even make even the slightest implication that they're Nazis. Don't worry, I'll keep my National Socialist inclinations to my self and won't talk about the Daily Stormer anymore.

I guess I don't even really know what to say. It seems really ridiculous that I have to come out and specifically say that I am against white nationalism but that is the reality of the world we are living in now. So,yeah. I  am against nazis and I  don't think that shit has any place in a  SUPPORT group. Fuck that!

The very idea of nazis in the United States is insulting to me. I've had relatives who fought against this ideology in W.W. II. The cemeteries are full of soldiers who lost their lives fighting nazism in all its forms. These people would be rolling over in their graves if they knew their grandsons or great-grandsons were looking up to and emulating this vicious ideology.

Nestor, you were asked to keep it to yourself, but in the very act of saying you would, you made sure that everyone would know that you subscribe to the nazi ideology. That is not keeping it to yourself. Expect consequences.
