CrazyRedhead
I was not sure where to post this, so mods please move it if necessary...... I've been on 2mg Risperdal for approximately 4 months, and still I haven't gained any weight......I haven't drastically reduced my calories or anything like that, haven't done any extra exercising either. After reading horror stories around the internet where people on Risperdal gained large amounts of weight, I was almost scared to try it.....My pdoc said a lot of people do gain at least some on it, but not everyone does. Maybe it's the Wellbutrin I'm taking that's helping me not gain weight?....Not sure....I know 2mg is a fairly low dose, too. Anyway, I was expecting some gain, but fortunately haven't gained a pound. Thoughts?
Teh Gaben
I was up to 7 or 8mg of it and actually lost a few lbs rather than gaining anything. Not heard of it being bad for weight gain in all honesty. I didn't do that much research into it when I first started taking it though.
CrazyRedhead
I read up on it when I first started taking it, and found all these stories where people gained quite a few pounds on it. I guess Dr Google isn't always a good thing....LOL Edited November 16, 2017 by CrazyRedhead
Rabbit37
Ha, yes please, stay away from dr. Google. I was on 3mg for years, if I gained anything it was maybe 5lbs, and that could be attributed to maybe just not eating healthy foods. Don't think risperdal made me crave anything bad. I also don't have the seroquel munchies either, in fact have been losing weight on it. So, ymmv, as always. Risperdal is a good med, was very disappointed that my prolactin levels were too high for too long, pdoc pulled me off of it. Oh, and just a note, *don't* skip a dose. Yikes, within 24 hours I would have cold sweats and dizziness. That's really the only negative thing I could say about it.

So far haven't had any lab work done on prolactin levels.....How often is that usually done?
Rabbit37
I only had blood draws on maybe a yearly basis (lithium was stable). But two years in a row, prolactin levels were too high. The concern is bone loss. Have you seen the "Claritin clear" commercials? Where you think you're seeing clear, then they peel away a layer and it's so much clearer? That was me with risperdal. I was amazed how clear my mind was after 3 days. Totally broke through the fog. Damn good med.
CrazyRedhead
Thanks again, Rabbit....I will ask my doc her policy about doing the blood draws to measure prolactin.....So far, I haven't seen any improvement in my OCD symptoms......My severe OCD was the reason she put me on it... I might need a dose increase, but maybe she wants to keep dose as low as possible....I will have to discuss with her next month........

You seem to have treatment-resistent form of OCD :-( I know Risperdal is common as an augmentation strategy (as well as other anti-psychotics). I'm scared to go on one; weight gain is one of my main concerns, but at least it's a little bit reassuring that you didn't gain any weight on it! Was there anything medication or therapy wise that did treat the symptoms of OCD?

jt07
I did not gain weight on Risperdal. I took it up to 4 mgs and found it weight neutral for me. What I liked about Risperdal was that I had no - absolutely none - side effects at all. It was like taking a placebo, but it did help me at a time when I was really, really low. Unfortunately, the second time I tried taking it (this time generic), it didn't help as much.
Wonderful.Cheese
I didn't gain weight on risperdal even on was it 12 or 6 mg? I forget sorry I was in a state hospital. Now I'm on invega it's younger brother and I have not gained weight on it either. I take 12 mg of that. It is a head clearing med like rabbit said. At least for my psychosis it has helped in that way bit by bit over time. Good luck it is a good med. I don't think my prolactin levels are high I still get that special time of the month if you know what I mean. Sorry if that's TMI.
