Hello, all.

Long-time reader, first-time poster.

I started Pristiq on Wednesday, and haven't had a bowel movement since then. This follows hard on the heels of my Seroquel constipation saga. IT's the weekend, and I have no way to get in touch with any of my docs until Monday. Should I just take some MiraLax and hope that does the job? Has anyone else experienced this with Pristiq or another AD?

Well, I have no med problem, but have a lifelong problem with constipation. Can you take fibers? Something that seems to get things moving in the meantime is hot beverages... either coffee, or hot lemon water. Seems to help me.

@Byron-Black Same problem here :-( Effexor is very chemically similar to Pristiq and commonly known to cause constipation. Luckily, being on a stimulant (ritalin) has helped in this area, as well as copious amounts of coffee every morning (usually at least 3 mugs with breakfast). Taking extra Magnesium helps...as does drinking more water, getting exercise everyday...

Eating extra fiber or prunes does not do anything for me. I've tried Metamucil type fiber products and they just make me bloated and gassy. It's awful. I hate to take strong laxatives, because often they cause the opposite effect (severe cramping & watery grossness), your system gets addicted to them and then those stop working as well. I'm also curious what else works for people?

Thanks everyone. My pdoc (who is actually a nurse) got back to me and said to take the Miralax and that we don't want to stop the meds yet when we've just started. I'm not happy with the possibility that this might last forever, but I guess it could just be temporary. We'll see.

Coffee. And if you can stand it, a couple of drags off a cigarette. Don’t become a smoker just because you can’t poop, but a trip to Starbucks and half a Marlboro will probably, uh, work things out.

Thanks for the good advice. I know it works. Unfortunately, coffee and cigarettes are both off limits for me. I'm a reformed smoker, and caffeine brings on panic attacks.

I haven't tried fiber supplements yet, although I do eat a reasonably high fiber diet: lots of whole grains, vegetables, nuts, etc. I do drink hot herbal tea twice a day.

miralax, high fiber.......

I've used Miralax in the past with good results. My gdoc says that you can use Miralax as long as you need to without anything bad happening, but I'm paranoid about my body becoming dependent on it.

You can’t become dependent on it, it just draws in water to your bowel

Looking back on it in retrospect I giggle a bit because when I started Pristiq the constipation was the worst. I don't think I actually had a BM for like the first 2-3 days but it eventually cleared up. Cymbalta was similar but Pristiq was the worst for constipation. It goes away though. Give it time, and like everyone else said, fiber and lots of water will definitely help.

This same thing happened to me on pristiq. Two weeeks and no bowel movement without doing an enema. Eventually stopped because it was so bad. Ambien same provlem but messed my bowels up for 2 months. Had to see a GI doctor and do I bunch of cleanses. SO not worth it for me and discontinued it

I know you posted this in January of this year, If you are still having problems with constipation while on Pristiq, it won't get any better.  I was on Pristiq for almost 18 months and I had extreme constipation.  I took Miralax also, sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.  It was just another medicine to take to offset the constipation of Pristiq and I personally got tired of it.  Plus almost every day I was bloated.  With doctors advise I tapered off Pristiq and I am in 5 days without pristiq and already I am going daily.  The discontinued effects of coming off this medicine is no fun, I'm currently still going through them.  I hope you are doing better.
