farshad040
has anyone used wellbutrin to help with the weight gain from antipsychotic meds? Edited February 2, 2018 by farshad040
CrazyRedhead
I was on WellbutrinSR for awhile before my pdoc added Risperdal to my current meds......It's a low dose of Risperdal, though, only 2mg. I was scared of gaining weight from the Risperdal because it's listed as a common side effect of this med........But , I've been on the Risperdal about 6 months so far, and I haven't gained anything......Haven't changed my eating habits or exercise habits, either. The lack of weight gain for me could possibly be due to the Wellbutrin, or possibly because I'm on such a low dose of Risperdal....Maybe it's a combination of both of those factors--I just don't know. I do know I'm very satisfied that I haven't gained any weight....... Edited February 2, 2018 by CrazyRedhead

farshad040
I havent started abilify yet but when I google abilify weight gain there is a bit of talk about it so I thought it might be a common side effect with abilify and thus I would be more likely to experince weigh gain too. So weight gain is not common with Abilify?? for Anyone that takes or taken abilify did you gain any weight? However, I have seen folks here on CB, such as @mikl_pls above that have not gained anything on it......Everyone reacts differently to meds, as you probably know. If your doc is recommending Abilify for you, I'd say it's at least worth a try.....If you do gain weight on it, you can always stop the med, and try something else, under your doc's guidance of course. Wonderful.Cheese
When I was taking just Abilify along with Lamictal and maybe a few others like klonopin and perhaps wellbutrin XL, I didn't gain much weight. However, I was hospitalized long term at the time and was very inactive. I had used to run on the treadmill for 3-4 miles maybe 5 times a week I'd say even sometimes more than 5 times. So with no exercise and eating three big ish meals a day, that led to weight gain of maybe 20 lbs over the course of nearly a year. Had I been not in the state hospital and outpatient and allowed to continue my exercise routine I bet I would not have gained that weight. Even the Dr at the state hospital said so. She said the weight gain was most likely due to inactivity and three hots a day. Abilify I have always found to be weight neutral IME. All I can advise is to give it a try if your Dr recommended it. If you do notice weight gain you can always ask to be switched to a different med as others have said. It's a great med IME and IMO. It affects everyone differently but I've had nothing but good experiences with it. Unlike some other meds which will not be named...!
notloki
The eight losing effects of wellbutrin are short lived you get used to them quickly.
Blahblah
My experiences with Wellbutrin, I don't think it necessarily makes you lose weight or lose appetite. It did work on my cravings (specifically those intense cravings you get from alcohol, smoking, sugar, chocolate) so if you are someone that has difficulty with strong cravings, and spontaneous/uncontrollable overeating, it could possibly help with that. I felt satiated after meals. When I was on it, it did nothing for my mood, but i noticed I did not want to drink beer or wine at all (with is normal for me at dinnertime) Edited February 2, 2018 by Blahblah
crtclms
Yeah, I agree with notloki. Wellbutrin isn't really a medication that is used solely for weight loss. You might lose a little, and while I've never seen this happen, you might gain a little. For me, the speediness that made me not hungry ended after a couple of weeks at most. Juniper29
I have not gained any weight so far on Abilify. I did lose weight on Wellbutrin but only because I was too nauseated most of the time to eat anything.
browri
Abilify is a partial agonist at 5HT2C receptors. Meaning when serotonin levels are high, it will block the receptor, and when they are low, it will activate the receptor. Blocking 5HT2C is generally associated with increased appetite, whereas activating that receptor makes you feel full. This is how the new weight-loss med Belviq (lorcaserin) works. Abilify when used on its own has less of an effect on weight and may actually cause weight loss because serotonin levels are lower leading to activation of the above said receptor and therefore a reduced appetite. However, when taken with an antidepressant that increases serotonin in the synapse like an SSRI or serotonergic tricyclic, the higher serotonin levels render Abilify a pure 5HT2C antagonist, which would make you feel hungry. This is why Abilify caused statistically significant weight gain in the antidepressant adjunct trials but this weight gain couldn't be reproduced in the monotherapy trials for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. YMMV though. @mikl_pls has been taking 120mg/day of duloxetine with aripiprazole and has been steadily losing weight. We're all different.
