is this too much? prozac, abilify, and klonopin

Recommended Posts

I just recently started my Klonopin after my pdoc had exhausted every other option. I've been on the other two medications for quite awhile now. He said that he didn't want to put me on a benzo, but the benefits outweigh the risks. I'm on Prozac 80 mg (the maximum dose) and Abilify (also the maximum dose) and Klonopin .5 mg (take half a pill twice a day). My mom did NOT approve of me being put on a benzo. My dad says I'd be better off if I'd go off of 90% of the medication I'm on. But honestly? I've never felt better. Now with the Klonopin I feel NORMAL again. At least, as normal as I'll ever feel. I don't have constant, intruding thought that assault my brain on a daily basis.Am I really taking too many meds? I feel ashamed that I have to take this much. It makes me feel like I'm a weak person for depending on these meds to restore my sanity.

It’s not a sign of weakness. I’ve been on a cocktail of drugs, sometimes much greater than but never less than 3 medications, for 16 years. Everyone has issues in life they have to contend with in one way or another, I have to take medication to deal with mine. This doesn’t make my problem or its remedy any less legit than another person’s baggage. No one’s functioning at perfect. No one. If your medication is helping you to function, then keep with it. It’s not any of your father’s business anymore (remembered you are in college from other posts you have made). And I mean you could be using more damaging means to get by too, but you are choosing a more responsible path. That shows you are able to make mature decisions about your own health. Keep with it.

No. I do not believe it is too much. Your pdoc prescribed you these meds for a reason. And if they are working, that's wonderful! Your parents, I'm sorry to say, are ignorant about mental illnesses and psychiatric meds. Maybe you could bring them to a Dr appointment or print off an article or two for them to read if they would be willing to. But with some people there is just no talking sense into. So I say don't feel bad. I'm on 3 antipsychotics plus many more meds at the moment. If it works, it works. Don't beat yourself up. You deserve to feel good.

You have nothing to be ashamed of. Nothing. When people are sick they need meds...you need to do what's best to make your life as good as possible. There are many people ignorant of mental illness and that probably will never change but that's their fault not urs. Your just trying to be the best self you can be

Just so you know- I was on probably 8 meds when I was 16

I don't think it's too much.  I have been taking the following for over 10 years:

40 mg prozac

50 mg welbutrin

25 mg trazodone at bedtime as needed

5 mg adderall

10 mg ambien at bedtime as needed

0.1 mg klonopin twice a day as needed

Now I've tried stopping some and even all but end up back in the black abyss of depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD and insomnia.

Take what your doctor orders and communicate with him/her about how it's working.

Forget what anyone else says.  U be u, let them be them.  Nobody would be telling them that they would be better off not taking meds, if they had a physical illness.

Are you in therapy ?  You seem to have some issues of self esteem that need working on plus separation from your parents wants, feelings, and desires if you are not a minor. Life is about what you want and what you think is best for you. Once you are an adult you don't have to please anyone.
