Thunderstruck
Saphris sublingual should i brush after taking medication? I know I am supposed to wait 10 minutes before/after taking this med before drinking or eating. I just called the pharmacist and he said Saphris may contain a little bit of lactose and not to worry about brushing your teeth again. So, just to clarify, I take a dissolving med too (zyprexa zydis) and usually only brush my teeth once a day in the morning. But I'm trying to get better and brush at night too. Do do you brush before you take your dissolving med and then you don't need to brush again? That's what the pharmacist said, is that correct? I just want to make sure I'm understanding correctly. Thanks!!!
mmaryland
Wait when you write "Saphris said" do you mean the medication guide or your prescribing physician? When I was on Saphris for a short period of time I would take it about 30-45 minutes prior to bedtime while I was finishing up my activities for the day, so I would brush my teeth [I wish I could say at least half the time but the reality of it is much lower than half the time] before getting into bed. You could always brush before taking Saphris and then lie in bed and watch TV until the sedation kicks in, for me it took roughly 30-45 minutes to feel sedated. If you didn't want to go that route, then you could do what I did and take the Saphris 30 minutes before bedtime and then brush your teeth right before hopping into bed. I say it would be easier to brush your teeth, then get into bed and take your Saphris, maybe watch some TV until it kicks in and you fall asleep. By the way, do you take it twice a day or just once at bedtime? Just asking because the prescribing information says to take it twice a day, which I think it very impractical due to the somnolence and sedation it produces. However, I just looked up the full prescribing guide and it states "SAPHRIS is a sublingual tablet. To ensure optimal absorption, patients should be instructed to place the tablet under the tongue and allow it to dissolve completely. The tablet will dissolve in saliva within seconds. SAPHRIS sublingual tablets should not be split, crushed, chewed, or swallowed. Patients should be instructed to not eat or drink for 10 minutes after administration." (Allergan, 2017). Also, I found this about the water consumption "The exposure of SAPHRIS following administration of water 10 minutes after sublingual dosing was equivalent to that when water was administered 30 minutes after dosing. Reduced exposure to SAPHRIS was observed following water administration at 2 minutes (19% decrease) and 5 minutes (10% decrease)." (Allergan, 2017). I never knew that drinking water even 30 minutes after taking Saphris was basically the same as drinking water 10 minutes after taking Saphris, so you might want to consider taking the route of brushing your teeth first, then taking your Saphris maybe 5 minutes after, just to be on the safe side, once you're lying down in bed, instead of taking it and resuming normal activities like I did before the sedation kicked in and I sluggishly drug myself to my bed. I didn't see anything in the full prescribing information about brushing your teeth, but it can be found here if you want to read the whole thing for yourself, I know I always do with every medication I get prescribed just because I want to know every bit of information available on the medicine I am putting into my body. Hope the Saphris works well for you! I couldn't tolerate the next day sedation, which was problematic when you have 9am and 10am college classes lol but I hope you can tolerate Saphris and keep it in your medication regimen, as I heard it was a pretty darn effective medication.
