Depakote? Am I barking up the wrong tree?

Recommended Posts

I have been depressed. I am not having suicidal thoughts and can get through the day, but I feel sad, and like a terrible person. I have intrusive thoughts of past mistakes 10, 20, 30 years ago. Every awful thing I have done.  Not on purpose, mistakes. And self-deprecating thoughts. I think I am hideous and I feel great shame.

My doc upped my lexapro and abilify to 20mg each.  Maybe, it would be worse, but I still feel pretty lousy.

I am thinking of asking to switch from lamictal to depakote. I feel anxious as well as depressed, and they feed on each other.

I have taken depakote in the past and it helped with racing thoughts and hallucinations.  I don't remember how my mood was then.

But, I just read where depakote made someone depressed. And, I know lamictal is more for the depressed side.

I see pdoc Tues. I am going to ask what he thinks. he may raise the lamictal instead, I don't know

I don't think you're barking up the wrong tree if you know it's worked for you before.  I think that's a great sign.  Part of the reason that pdoc's take a med history.  Obviously there aren't guarantees that it wouldn't go wrong, but past success is usually a good indicator.

Depakote messed with my thyroid and I got super depressed, which is ironic because I was taking it in the first place due to a severe depression. I hope it works better for you than it did for me!

Thanks everyone

pdoc did not want to switch to depakote because it interacts with lamictal. I knew that.

He upped abilify another 5mg. He keeps bumping it up a little. I am on 25mg now. I told him i did not have much hope that will help, so he added 150mg wellbutrin, so i am at 450mg.

i feel sad, bad, hopeless.

If you tolerate Abilify well, and depression is your main issue, perhaps switching to Rexulti instead of Abilify would help? It has worked absolute wonders for my depression, with fewer side effects than Abilify had. At various times I've been on most of the meds you're on (Abilify, Seroquel, Lamictal, and Wellbutrin) and none of them did much for my depression (nor did Depakote.) I've been on Rexulti for 2 years now and had very few depressive episodes. Nothing is perfect, but it has been by far the most effective med I've been on.

@dtac  thank you. That sounds like a good option.

@confused I can second his recommendation. I've been on Rexulti now since the beginning of last Fall and it's been a huge help for me as well. On it's own it isn't a spectacular mood stabilizer but it does better in that department if you're taking another mood stabilizer. Its strong suits are more for the depression than anything, and for that Rexulti has been incredibly effective. It mixes really well with Trintellix and Vyvanse as well.

Thank you

I should update: I guess the tweaks in abilify and increasing wellbutrin worked. I am no longer having intrusive thoughts. I am not depressed, anymore,. I don't feel great, but I am okay
