Coffee and Cancer?

Recommended Posts

This is so depressing to me as a coffee drinker.....I love the stuff....

A California judge has now ruled that coffee needs to carry a cancer warning label because of a chemical created by the roasting process......So far, the warning label would only apply to coffee sold in the state of California, but who knows where that will lead...:

Something else to add to my list of things to worry about.....""SIGH""......:(

@jt07, I have also heard that coffee is beneficial to your health........This article from healthline.com says that coffee is the biggest dietary source of antioxidants:

This might be tied to recent reports I’ve heard regarding well done grilled meat. Something about grilling/roasting them at high temps causes carcinogens to form https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/evidence-grows-linking-grilled-meat-and-cancer-but-you-can-lower-the-risk/2017/06/02/f946078c-4549-11e7-a196-a1bb629f64cb_story.html?utm_term=.ecb4bf8a97fb wondering if the same could be true for deep roasting coffee beans. Haven’t read anything whether lighter roasts could be less harmful.

As with just about anything, I think moderation would be key. Heh, I can say that because I’m not a coffee addict. Sorry :)

LOL......I drink about 4-5 cups a day.....Don't know if that's considered "moderation" or not.......

I do know a couple of people who say they drink an entire pot of coffee in a day......

Also, according to this article in Newsweek, the same chemical in coffee (acrylamide) that supposedly is a carcinogen, is also in potato chips and french fries (or any fried starchy foods).

Coffee, soda, aloe vera extract,  aspirin, diazepam, ethanol (i.e. sweet, sweet beer), lithium carbonate, lorazepam, testosterone, tetracycline, phenobarbital, valproic acid, tomatoes, roasted asparagus, canned sweet potatoes and pumpkin, canned black olives, roasted nuts, roasted grain-based coffee substitutes, prune juice, bread crusts, and toast, breakfast cereals, crackers, cookies, pectin... need I go on?

I'm a regular consumer of 10 things off your list...and that's not even the complete list ;-)

California is loaded with moonbats who quiver at their own shadows.  The Prop 65 cancer warnings are a joke.  All they have really done is expose businesses to a rash of nuisance lawsuits from shyster lawyers and their army of "bounty hunters" seeking the smallest infraction of the Prop 65 nonsense.  A law that is enforced via private citizens suing businesses for compliance is ripe for abuse.  List of things that carry Prop 65 warnings (i.e. cause cancer) according to California:

Coffee, soda, aloe vera extract,  aspirin, diazepam, ethanol (i.e. sweet, sweet beer), lithium carbonate, lorazepam, testosterone, tetracycline, phenobarbital, valproic acid, tomatoes, roasted asparagus, canned sweet potatoes and pumpkin, canned black olives, roasted nuts, roasted grain-based coffee substitutes, prune juice, bread crusts, and toast, breakfast cereals, crackers, cookies, pectin... need I go on?

Stupid, stupid laws that law makers pass in order to justify their over-inflated salaries and budgets.

PS:  Note to anyone who thinks I am bashing California:  I am.  And, I live here.

THIS! As a fellow Californian, I have to deal with this crap everyday too. It makes me embarrassed to say I'm a liberal and from California.

Yeah If you try to actively avoid absolutely everything that "allegedly" causes cancer - I'm not sure what you could eat. The crazy thing is, the list of offenders seems to change every day and every source says something different. It's enough to make you OCD if you dwell on it too much. I say, try to eat as healthy as you can, but don't go overboard. And true, everything in moderation. I sure as hell will not be giving up coffee anytime soon. My grandfather drank an entire pot of coffee every single day (he said it was good for the mind) and he lived to be 99. No cancer...

You have to look at the big picture because coffee has some clear benefits that have to be weighed against whatever cancer incidence. Coffee has antioxidants along with being an acceptable psychostimulant for the masses.

A new study, peer reviewed in a major journal, revealed that coffee prevents liver cancer and is healthy for your liver. I don't get my medical information from You Tube because it is a HIGHLY UNRELIABLE source. Anybody you cites You Tube as a source of medical information should be shot (figuratively) or forced to actually adhere to all the health tips in You Tube.

For my entire life, researchers have been doing studies on coffee and they have not found that coffee is harmful. On the other hand, as notloki points out, several studies have shown benefit to drinking coffee. Coffee is one drink that you can drink freely as long as you don't pile it full with sugar and creamer.
