Need recommendation for new AP

Recommended Posts

Can anyone recommend an AP that will help put me to sleep like Clozapine?

I have tried most of the "-done" AP's with bad side effects, mainly Akathisia.  Seroquel was great for sleep until it started giving me restless legs.  Currently on Abilify, which is worthless for paranoia and delusional thoughts.

Any input is appreciated.  Not worried about weight gain since I basically eat a keto diet with fasting.

not that i know of. i have taken it concurrently with haldol or prolixin and THOSE gave me movement problems that needed cogentin/propranolol, respectively. the zyprexa can be fatiguing, for sure. and it can cause weight gain if you're not careful. it also can cause your blood sugar and cholesterol to elevate, so you'll want to get checked for those things quarterly.

but, really, zyprexa did its job. i'm just on a different cocktail now that features clozaril, but i have zyprexa PRN if i get any breakthrough symptoms.

Anyone experience movement problems with Zyprexa?

No, and I got akathisia with Abilify (and lexapro, but that's less relevant), pseudo-parkinsonian symptoms with Risperdal, and dyskinesias with seroquelXR.

Not saying it can't happen, but my track record is pretty awful for getting them.  I just had the AIMS 6-month test done and I got nothing wrong.

I’ve heard Zyprexa works well, but it’s a notorious weight-gainer.  My psychiatrist won’t prescribe it to any of his patients.  But it looks like a lot of people here like it!

I have a friend on Clozapine and I don’t know of anything more sedating.. Another friend of mine has a PRN for Thorazine if she has not slept for a few days.

I sleep great on Geodon and wake up with a smile.  Before coffee.  But, I had taken it a few years prior and couldn’t sleep ...Geodon wasn’t causing my insomnia.  My bipolar 1 gives me insomnia and sleeping pills don’t put me to sleep.  But no akathesia and I sleep soundly and no “hangover” in the morning.

Abilify worked for my mania and psychosis, but I agree it’s actianing.  Two months is a long time to go without sound sleep.  I feel for you.

Seroquel knocked me out sleepwise, but it was so hard to get moving in the morning.  I was still working then and I just had to switch.

Oh, I did lose weight on Geodon.  I increased my calories and it leveled off.  However, I have to eat at least 500 calories when I take it for it to work.

So, I started zyprexa at 2.5mg last night.  Supposed to go to 5mg in a few days.  I haven't slept so well in a long while.  I feel much calmer today.  Haven't had much in the way of paranoid thoughts.  Can't believe how quickly this med has worked.  Hoping for the best as I progress.  Much thanks to everyone who participated in this thread.

Also,  my Dr. had me take a DNA test to see which medications will work best for my body chemistry makeup.  It also tests for folic acid uptake which is responsible for neurotransmitter function.  Looking forward to seeing the results at my next appointment.  If anyone is interested the test is called Genesight by Assurex Health.
