Which of my medications cause ejaculation problems?

Recommended Posts

I am on

20 mg latuda

2 mg klonopin

10 mg ambien

200 mg trazodone

and i also take 50 mg of benadryl each night.

Which of these cause problems ejaculating? and what are replacements in their class of medications that dont cause ejaculation problems? I have no problem ejaculating when i watch porn and masturbate. But I finally had sex and i was able to maintain an erection but my penis was so numb i didnt even know my penis was erect and i didnt even feel the vagina i was in. It felt like something was around my penis but it was very little sensation and this girl i was with was very tight but i still felt nothing. Even when she touched my penis i felt barely anything like it wasnt there. Also i wasn't able to ejaculate even though she stimulated my penis for hours. My erection was stable all throughout the sex but it was never 100% erect but maintained about 65-70% erection for a few hours before we decided to stop.

I'm just making a guess, but the problem you describe could be a side effect of either latuda or trazodone......

I would suggest letting your doc know about it, and see what they recommend.

It's likely the Latuda or trazodone. Serotonin from the trazodone complicates sex for sure (delays climax and possibly causes insensitivity). You are on the antidepressant level dose of trazodone (lower dose than that are used for primarily for insomnia). Trazodone is also know to cause priapism, an involuntary erection that can last for too long and may be painful. Just FYI in case that occurs. Seek emergency attention if it lasts 4 hours (heck personally I would go earlier for help).

Latuda can affect your prolactin levels, one of your sex hormones. Too high of levels can you can develop breast tissue. Your doctor may occasionally do blood work to check your levels. Do not worry, high levels would be detected before breast development occurs.

SSRI induced sexual dysfunction can sometimes be improved with the addition of Wellbutrin (buproprion). If you are interested, I would consult your provider to see if it is appropriate. There are couple other options, example, switching to another SSRI like Remeron (mirtazepine). It has low incidence of sexual dysfunction and also helps with sleep. The only downside is that it can cause weight gain in some individuals.

I wish you the best of luck! It takes some time to get on the right medications. If it interferes with your relationship or is frustrating, definitely discuss this with your provider.

So the benzos i'm taking aren't likely to effect sexual function?

It is possible for Klonopin to cause sexual problems.........But I could find no reports at all of Ambien causing it.

Ejaculation d/o is actually listed as a traz side effect on medscape. Also found some reports that it can be used to treat premature ejaculation which would mean it could be causing or conspiring to cause your problem

Trazodone actually can enhance sexual function due to the 5-HT2A antagonism and, in higher doses, 5-HT2C antagonism. It can cause priapism in both sexes, and It can actually cause spontaneous orgasm in women. I don't think it's trazodone.

But then again, this source mentions that trazodone can cause ejaculatory inhibition that can be resolved from discontinuing trazodone: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17454520

It's possible that it could be the clonazepam too, however.

Quote

This retrospective study examined the records of 100 male veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) selected in alphabetical order from an active treatment file of 230 patients. Forty-two patients had received clonazepam (mean maximum dose: 3.4 +/- 1.6 mg/day) at some point during their treatment. Of these, 18 (42.9%) complained of significant sexual dysfunction (primarily erectile dysfunction). Eighty-four patients received diazepam (mean maximum dose: 52.1 +/- 29.7 mg/day), nine received alprazolam (mean maximum dose: 5.2 +/- 2.8 mg/day) and eight received lorazepam (mean maximum dose: 3.8 +/- 2.4 mg/day). None of these patients complained of sexual dysfunction during treatment with these three other benzodiazepines. Our findings suggest that benzodiazepines, particularly clonazepam in the current study, can be a cause of sexual dysfunction in many male patients.

They didn't mention ejaculatory dysfunction, but it may have been a problem in the patients since it mentioned "sexual dysfunction" in general.

I doubt it could be the Latuda at 20 mg.

Maybe ur pdoc could work with you to come up with another sleep strategy...although as mikl_pls suggested it's tough to nail down one culprit. Have you tried many other things for sleep?

I started this combo to avoid weight gain. I've found a way to get my weight under control through a ketogenic diet. So a med that causes weight gain as a side effect isn't a problem. So is remeron a good option? I thought it was an antidepressant too?

He mentioned he's taking Ambien 10mg.......I assume that's for sleep, too......

Yes, Remeron is an antidepressant.......For sleep, it works better at lower doses.

Sorry totally missed that...up way to late last night.

@JustGotOut it is an ad that affects serotonin but it works differently than trazodone (remeron is a tetracyclic while trazodone is a SARI) . It is a good option but if your current cocktail is working your pdoc may not want to rock the boat too much

Remeron doesn't effect serotonin? or why doesnt it cause sexual side effects?

Yes, it definitely affects serotonin, but as Iceberg said, it has a different mechanism of action. It also affects norepinephrine.

It does affect serotonin, via antagonism/inverse agonism of the 5HT2 and 5HT3 receptors.

SSRIs, which have the notoriety of causing sexual side-effects, are reuptake inhibitors.

So remeron decreases serotonin and ssris increase them?

I'm more stable now than ever. I am wondering if you guys think that it would be best to try to see if this problem goes away through avoiding porn and masturbation before tinkering with medications. Because I"ve been a heavy porn user for the last 16 years and watch some very explicit stuff. I also masturbate with a death grip. So I honestly don't know if its the meds or the porn and masturbation style.
