Just presecribed Adderall-New to stims

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

So at my appt yesterday I was prescribed Adderall. I've never tried any kind of stimulant before. Starting out at a low dose. 5mg twice a day, going up to 10mg twice a day after a week if everything is OK and going from there. My big concern is sleep. What is the expectation of any decent sleep if you take that dose say late afternoon? Are people able to take it that late and still get decent sleep? Or would it be better to take it  earlier in the day? 1-2PM? Or maybe even just take one hefty dose in the morning and that's it? I've read about the Adderall crash. Honestly, I wouldn't mind that if its in the evening around 8-9PM, but of course any earlier would be negative for me. I'm not the greatest sleeper so that's my biggest concern. Or is the stuff so good you really don't care about sleep? lol

I'm waiting for the prior auth on my insurance, so maybe it will be ready for pickup today and I can start this weekend. Thanks!

For me I cannot take it past 3 PM and get to sleep by 10-11 PM. I sleep well. I had an existing chronic insomnia problem and we were afraid it would mess with my sleep.

Great, that's probably what I'll try. Thanks for your input!

It's pretty easy to make amphetamine, hard to mess up. The difference in generics comes with the time release system, which is more complex. I no longer take time release formulations as none, save Vyvanse, live up to lasting even 6 hours in my system.

Thanks just asking because I was just reading up on Adderall experiences and see a lot of complaining about differences in Adderall generics. But I've been around long enough to know this is common for a lot of crazy meds. My prior auth came thru and the adderall I picked up is made by Sun Pharma. I also wanted to ask because the pharmacy I go to seems bad about switching generic manufacturers a lot. I've probably had 5 different brands of clonazepam over the last few years. But with that said I've never personally noticed a difference between them, although you will find lots of complaints about this online as well.

It's not so much the pharmacy that decides what generic manufacturer. The pharmacy has no choice but to take what their distributor offers them or not carry the med at all.

So I took my first 5mg dose this morning at 7 on an empty stomach. Effects came on slowly for the next couple of hours and by 9 I was alert, focused, and mildy euphoric. By 11 the effects started winding down. I took another 5mg at 130PM and almost an hour later I feel rather sleepy to tell you the truth. I feel like I could lay down and take a nap. I don't know if I actually could but that's how I feel. Feel a little strange. Body feels rather relaxed. A bit dizzy. I work in a hospital on medical equipment and just took my blood pressure and heart rate. Both normal. Thoughts?

  • 2 months later...

So I’ve been on 15mg IR twice a day for about the last month and a half or so. I’ve done really well on this dosage except for one thing. Sleep has been pretty tough. I’ve held out hoping I could get used to it and the insomnia would go away but if it’s still hanging around this long I have my doubts. I basically find myself having to take a break a couple of days a week and pop an ambien to get a good nights rest. Before this I might’ve taken a total of 3-4 ambien in the last year. And it’s not something I really don’t want to get in the habit of taking every night. My second dose is usually around noon so not taking it late in the day.

So idk what to do at this point. Would Ritalin be any different? Would try something like  vyvanse which is to my understanding just time released pure  dextroamphetamine perhaps be better in the insomnia dept? I’m guessing probably  no to both but wanted to ask.

What about a lower second dose?

@Iceberg has a good point and it lends to something you were saying earlier, @quiet storm. Perhaps talking to your pdoc about taking 20mg in the AM and then another 10mg in the PM around noon or 1PM as a booster. I believe @Blahblah does this with Ritalin.

Ritalin doesn't keep me up usually, unless I were to take large doses later in the day. I take 20mg (extended) when I get up, then I start feeling a slump after lunch when it wears off (unfortunately, quite quick, like 4 hours)

Pdoc said I could "experiment" to see what works for afternoons, she says my overall dose is on low-end,  but I'll often take 10mgIR boost around 1pm or 2pm, lasts a couple hours. Then I'm definitely tired after dinner...I am trying to take weekend breaks though, very tough because i really notice a difference when I take nothing. I  just want to lay in bed!
