Probiotics to prevent rehospitalization in bipolar patients (study)

Recommended Posts

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29693757

CONCLUSION:

Probiotic supplementation is associated with a lower rate of rehospitalization in patients who have been recently discharged following hospitalization for mania.

"Researchers from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine designed an interesting study to determine if probiotics could help people discharged from the hospital after a manic flare-up avoid rehospitalization. "

"The results were striking. The rates of rehospitalization were 51.1% in the placebo group and 24.2% in the group who took probiotics. On average, the reduction in readmission was 74% lower in the probiotic combination compared with the placebo arm of the study

This is very interesting. There has been a lot of research lately around Probiotics improving mental health....

Unfortunately, I can't seem to find the best ones to buy. I've tried quite a few (with high level of diverse, live active strains) for several months and they had no effect whatsoever on my mood, regularity, or digestion!  I've read that some brands were tested/analyzed and were found to be inactive, basically useless. Then when I talked to a natural pharmacist, she said that it's better to buy the refrigerated or liquid kinds - but they are sooooo expensive!

The natural pharmacist is right. The hydrochloric acid in your stomach kills weak solutions like in yogurt and most pills.

@notloki You seem pretty knowledgeable about supplements, vitamins & such. Is there a brand of Probiotics that you take?

Not really. I go to a health food store and get the liquid or high potency capsules. I only take acidophilus with most antibiotics to restore gut flora.  There is good evidence for treating diarrhea of different causes and IBS. The rest is not well studied. You should not take live cultures if you are on immunosuppressants like steroids (prednisone) or have a weak immune system as you may get sick from the bacteria you took. If healthy generally taking lactobacillus acidophilus is safe, the immune system will keep its growth in check.

I use Swanson for my supps. For Probiotics like a lactobacillus you look for the highest culture count.  https://www.swansonvitamins.com/probiotics

From the NIH:

"

What's the Bottom Line?

How much do we know about probiotics?

Although a great deal of research has been done on probiotics, much remains to be learned.

What do we know about the usefulness of probiotics?

Some probiotics may help to prevent diarrhea that's caused by infections or antibiotics. They may also help with symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. However, benefits have not been conclusively demonstrated, and not all probiotics have the same effects.

What do we know about the safety of probiotics?

In healthy people, probiotics usually have only minor side effects, if any. However, in people with underlying health problems (for example, weakened immune systems), serious complications such as infections have occasionally been reported.

This Probiotic works great.

It keeps me regular and helps me to lose some weight in the process.  I have noticed that my stomach area is much flatter as well.  I only take one a day, although it says to take two.  So it is a pretty good deal for 2 months worth IMHO.
