Propranol or something like that

Recommended Posts

I've been prescribed this for anxiety and panic attacks.  I guess it brings the blood pressure down and relieves tension and stops heart racing.

Has anyone else used this med?  How did you do with it?

I took it for social anxiety years ago.  It's really good for physical anxiety symptoms like racing heart, sweating, shaking and stammering, etc.   It does carry a risk of increased depression.  Drinking on it is a bad a idea but if you are intent on doing so anyway, be aware that two drinks could easily put you on the floor so make sure you're somewhere safe.

I took it briefly a few years ago when I had an anti-benzo pdoc and we were considering a PRN anxiety med. Propranol helps with physical anxiety symptoms, like racing heartbeat, but this also means that it decreases your cardiac output during physical exertion by not allowing your heartbeat to get as elevated then. I'm a serious runner, and this was noticeable, even if I had taken it in the morning and wasn't running until 8+ hours later (my pdoc told me that this effect should wear off within 2-3 hours, which was NOT true for me). It wasn't worth it for me and I just managed without a PRN for a while until I moved and got a new pdoc. That pdoc prescribed me ativan, which I have taken on and off since, and for me, this has fewer side effects. But if you want/need a non-benzo PRN and are ok with the possibility that it might make strenuous physical activity more difficult, it might be a good med.

I take it for EPS from Latuda.  It took a few days to really work, but I've noticed that aside from eliminating the EPS it really does calm me down.

I didn't know about it lowering physical output.  This might explain why when I push myself harder on bike rides I seem to hit the wall faster.

But it makes taking Latuda possible so I don't want to give it up.
